Steve Bruce loving it as Newcastle United beat Manchester United “I thought who is this ginger kid…”
Going into the weekend, Steve Bruce had only Watford below him.
The NUFC Head Coach has constantly changed his tactics and team selection, Sunday was no different.
Reverting from his back four formation at Leicester a week earlier, to Rafa’s three/five at the back.
Whilst in terms of players, five changes made after the five goal hammering.
Yesterday was against significantly weaker opposition, Man Utd far below Leicester’s level at the minute.
However, all five changes appeared to improve the team.
Clark for Dummett, Willems instead of Atsu, Saint-Maximin for Muto and Yedlin replacing Krafth.
Whilst the big one was Matty Longstaff making his Premier League debut in place of the suspended Isaac Hayden. Shelvey only making he bench and Ki out of the squad altogether.
Thankfully it all paid off, especially in central midfield.
Steve Bruce declaring afterwards: ‘All you can do is answer your critics by getting a result.’
Which is true up to a point, that point being you have to get many more results like Sundays to be looking up rather than down.
You can understand the temptation but Steve Bruce should bite his lip until he gets any kind of run of decent results, rather than using any win that does come along as a chance to bite back against the criticism (most of it justified) that has come his way so far; ‘I know I’m not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but the nonsense that flies around is insulting – hopefully this helps the cause.’
Winning games (plural) is what he and indeed his players as well of course need to be doing on a regular basis.
Winning overshadows everything and that is true at any football club, not just Newcastle.
I know I’m not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but the nonsense that flies around is insulting – hopefully this helps the cause.
Steve Bruce after beating Manchester United:
“All you can do is answer your critics by getting a result.
“We knew that this run was going to be difficult and I hope this is the turning point.
“I have waited something like 20 years for a result against United.
“To beat a club of Manchester United’s size is always a special thing and considering the start we have had and the teams we’ve played, eight points, we’ll accept that.
“When you lose badly (like at Leicester), everyone comes under the pump, thankfully we responded and for a young kid to make his debut and blast one in from 20 yards, it is something else.
“I am delighted for everybody.
“What we needed was a response after last week and that was there for everyone to see.
“I know I’m not going to be everyone’s cup of tea but the nonsense that flies around is insulting – hopefully this helps the cause.
“They (the Longstaff family) are a very proud family.
“For one of your sons to be playing, let alone two…and 19 and 21 years old, it is something else.
“When it fell to him (Matty) I thought I’ve seen him drill them in in training but to do it on the big stage!
“He has been a breath of fresh air, he just wants to play football.
“I thought who is this ginger kid when we were in China?
“He has been good in training and it didn’t faze him.
“He enjoyed it, (though) he probably didn’t sleep well last night and he won’t get much sleep again tonight.
“It’s quite a story.
“I have been going 20 odd years and not been able to beat Manchester United and he (Matty Longstaff) has done it straight away.”
