Sky Sports reveal Newcastle United have held talks to sign Ibrahima Sissoko
Newcastle United have held talks to sign Ibrahima Sissoko according to Sky Sports.
They say that their information is that talks have been held with the intention of the midfielder arriving in January, to help in the relegation fight.
Sissoko turned 22 on Sunday and was recruited from Ligue 2 club Brest in summer 2018.
Making rapid strides, he instantly adapted to the step up and made 35 appearances for Ligue 1 Strasbourg.
Arriving in the same transfer window as Matz Sels did from Newcastle, the pair helped the club finish 11th in the French top tier last season.
Ibrahima Sissoko is 6ft 4 tall and the central midfielder has played at the various youth levels for France, up to and including Under 21.
Sky Sports say that they understand the transfer fee would be around £10m but that their ‘sources’ at Newcastle United have told them that no final deal has been agreed so far.
The broadcaster also states that Newcastle have been watching the player for some time and have previously tried to sign him.
Ibrahima Sissoko wouldn’t appear to help too much on the goals front if he arrives which of course is NUFC’s biggest problem, the central midfielder having scored only three goals in his 48 Strasbourg appearances in all competitions.
Whilst he wasn’t a regular goalscorer for Newcastle either, some fans feel that Mohamed Diame has been a bit of a miss.
He would get in and amongst the opposition and help to break down play whereas this season Newcastle have largely stood off the opposition, letting them dominate.
Whether this is simply Steve Bruce’s tactics and/or because he feels he doesn’t have the players is open to debate.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Diame has played all eight league games for Al Ahli in the Qatar Stars League, though he is yet to score.
Strasbourg haven’t made the best of starts this season with Ibrahima Sissoko and Matz Sels, currently fifth bottom of Ligue 1.
Steve Bruce has already used five different central midfielders but NUFC are yet to dominate in that area in any game so far.
