Ole Gunnar Solskjaer issues an apology after Newcastle United

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is feeling the heat.

An abject failure at Cardiff where he relegated them, the football world was stunned when the Norwegian was then given the caretaker’s role after Mourino left.

Talk about painting yourself into a corner…a very good set of results almost all against weak teams (nine of 13 games were against the nine clubs that finished bottom nine last season), meant Manchester United had little choice but to make the role permanent.

From pretty much the moment the change was made from caretaker, Man Utd have dropped like a stone.

The last 13 Premier League games now show two wins, five draws and six defeats.

After losing against Newcastle United, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says ‘We have given ourselves a tough task to get into the top four.’

The very fact he is even mentioning top four and Champions League should see the media ridiculing the Manchester United boss.

The reality is that they are only two points above the relegation zone and to be fair, Solskjaer declared after the latest defeat: ‘I say sorry to the (Manchester United) fans that we are not winning games.’

Next they play Liverpool at Old Trafford in 13 days time and after only eight games, the scousers are already 15 points ahead of their most hated rivals. After making their worst ever start in 30 years, if Manchester United play like they did yesterday and are humiliated by Liverpool at home, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be in a very difficult position.

Excuses and talks of ‘rebuild’ will only go so far, especially with Man Utd fans who think they have an automatic right to success.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reflects on Sunday’s game at St James Park:

“I say sorry to the (Manchester United) fans that we are not winning games.

“We have given ourselves a tough task to get into the top four. Never mind top six.

“We need to get results, we need to get momentum.

“Every game at this club should be a winnable game.

“We have to raise our game and raise our supporters mood with Liverpool next.

“The game was symptomatic of where we are.

“We don’t create enough chances to deserve to win a game of football.

“I didn’t see it coming.

“We couldn’t control the ball, it was a hot potato and bouncing off our feet. S

“The second half it was better.

“Confidence is a big thing and performance and results give you confidence – when there’s a decision to make they don’t do it instinctively – it affects everyone.

“We are unhappy with the result, that is down to us starting a rebuild.

“We are going through a very difficult period and when you lack six of the starting eleven from the first game, of course that will impact on performances.

“We will work hard to get them (injured players) back but the lads who are out there, gave everything, the attitude is fantastic but the decision making was not good enough.

“We gave them too many counter-attacks and that lifted them and lifted the crowd and Brucey.”
