Newcastle United 1 Manchester United 0 – Sunday 6 October 4.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle winning at St James Park on Sunday afternoon.

Jamie Swan:

“Beating Man Ure on any day is always sweet, but when we are so desperate and when we are under the self induced microscope after last week – even sweeter.

“For young Matty Longstaff to spank in the winner, is just great for the lad and warms the cockles of your heart amid the bloody gloom!

“Buzzing for him and he played fantastic. Man of the match no doubt.

“For all the deserved grief for Bruce, for the very first time we looked like we had some kind of shape and plan.

“Something to build on? Maybe, but this ManUre team are sh..e (lol) – so tough to judge.”

Paul Patterson:

“Still not having it.

“Pleased for Matt Longstaff but that was the worst Manchester United side in my lifetime.

“As predictable a win as the next unpredictable defeat.

“Nice for a headline but lower mediocrity is still the aim.”

Ben Cooper:

“Something to celebrate at last for NUFC as debutant Matty Longstaff hit a second half cracker to take the points.

“The black and whites were the better side for the most part and only looked like conceding when some accurate Manyoo set pieces went into the six yard box.

“Apart from that NUFC were well worth winning this relegation six pointer.

“Good effort all round.”

Brian Standen:

“Much better.

“ASM provides something different!

“Younger Longstaff showed up well!

“Whole team showed what we need. – effort!

“One word to those boycotting, you missed out today!”

David Punton:

“The stuff of dreams for Matty Longstaff.

“A local lad. From the youth ranks. Home debut. Winning goal. Against Manchester United, a result that heaps more pressure on their beleaguered manager.

“It was a game billed as two fallen Uniteds, both with mounting troubles, though we’d argue we have it worse with Mr Ashley.

“The mood music for Steve Bruce was horrendous going into this game. A 5-0 humiliation and huge question marks over his tactical acumen.

“Those question marks, for me, still remain.

“But credit has to be where it’s due, this was a stirring response from the players.

“We need more of this and the Longstaff midfield axis has to continue.”

GToon;

“A great win and a decent performance against very average opponents.

“The Longstaff brothers were excellent and all of the lads put a shift in today.

“It’s always great to beat that lot.

“Loved watching Matty charging after the ball in the last five minutes like some little kid.

“Saint Maxim looked very good too.

“I might be being picky but Almiron didn’t do a lot and looks like he’s struggling at the moment.”

Kieran Reynolds:

“Does it get much better than a Geordie accademy product scoring the winning goal on his debut against Man United?

“Matt Longstaff was superb today.

“Much better performance today.

“This formation suits the team and Bruce would be wise to stick with it.

“Don’t try to fix something that was not broken.”

Steve Hickey:

“A Rafaesque performance.

“Steve Bruce is right, it’s the only way that these players can play, took him long enough.

“I hope for a few more wins like this before buying a goalscorer in the new year.

“The Longstaffs, along with Hayden, can be our engine room for years to come.

“ASM was excellent, as was Schar.”

Nat Seaton:

“It’s what we all dream of, scoring a goal at the Gallowgate end on your home league debut!!

“Forget about how poor Man United were, I’m going to savour some Newcastle joy – it’s been a while…”

Anthony Stafford:

“Can’t fault it really.

“But still allowing teams tons of room on right to wander and cross ball.

“Still haven’t grasped possession. Need to be way further up pitch.

“But that’s neither here nor there, good effort from whole team.

“3 valuable points well earned.”
