Newcastle 1 Wolves 1 – Match ratings and comments on all NUFC players
We asked Jack Lacey-Hatton to give us his match ratings after Newcastle 1 Wolves 1.
Centre-backs Federico Fernandez and Jamaal Lascelles combining to give Newcastle a rare first half lead.
Only for Wolves to dominate after the break, Otto scoring an equaliser and in the end Newcastle lucky to get a point as the visitors wasted some great chances.
Jack Lacey-Hatton gives us his NUFC player ratings and comments.
Dubravka – 5
A solid display partially ruined by a weak palm away for the Wolves goal.
Goalkeepers make mistakes but it was a huge one at a crucial time in the game. A solid game otherwise.
Lascelles – 7
Superb movement and a powerful header capped a good display from the skipper.
Marshalled a back three (that would not be anyone’s first choice) very well.
Also kept concentration late on when Wolves were pressing for the win.
Fernandez – 7
Every time Fernandez gets called up to start he seems to do an excellent job.
Made sure the Wolves front two didn’t have space to operate.
The cross for the Lascelles goal was exquisite. Possibly our best player on the day.
Clark – 6
Looked like he would be exposed by a lack of pace at times, particularly when faced with Traore, but managed to keep his composure.
Unlucky to receive a booking.
Yedlin – 5
Not enough going forward from the US international, although that may have partially been down to the set-up of the team.
The one time he burst forward on the counter attack he was let down by a poor pass from Almiron.
Willems – 6
Another decent display from our Dutch wing-back.
Composed on the ball, won his share of aerial duels and nearly put us back in the lead with a wonderful cut in from the left, his driven shot only narrowly missing the post.
S.Longstaff – 5
A pretty decent display from the elder Longstaff was ruined by the red card.
Even though Neves made the most of it, it was a challenge he didn’t have to make. Was reckless and for me deserved the red card.
M.Longstaff – 6
Another good shift from Matty, who was crucial in us retaining possession during our best spell of the first half.
Almiron – 7
His best game of this season?
To many that might not be a high bar but he was full of running throughout and helped create most of our chances.
The first goal will come soon if he keeps playing like this.
Saint-Maximin – 7
If Saint-Maximin can ever consistently sort out his end product we have a real player on our hands.
His trickery and pace gave Wolves problems throughout, just needs to add the final touches.
His lung-bursting run into the penalty area in the second half was one of the brightest moments of the afternoon.
Joelinton – 4
Week and ineffective. Barely featured in the first half, yet still managed to look flat in the second.
His poor touch caused the red card situation.
Never looked like scoring. Again. Hugely disappointing.
A real, (if expected) shame that Carroll has picked up his first injury because otherwise he would be pushing for a start.
Shelvey – N/A (Not on long enough)
Atsu – N/A (Not on long enough)
Gayle – N/A (Not on long enough)
