Newcastle 1 Wolves 1 – Sunday 27 October 2pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle drawing at St James Park on Sunday afternoon.

Jamie Smith:

“Another rubbish point in a game where the lack of any semblance of attacking prowess was terrifying.

“People went on ridiculous when Leicester’s incredible win on Friday took us out of the relegation zone.

“News flash there is that Southampton have the twist option of changing manager or investing in their club in January, whereas we are a big sandwich board with no interest in being a football team.

“We won’t improve and are heading down.

“Having said, the amount of favours set to roll in from the agents we’ve sorted out by paying alleged £40 million for Xisco mark 2 up front is sure to pay dividends in future, and the accounts are clean as a whistle, right Mike fans?”

Paul Patterson:

“Bloody lucky there.

“Not sure how VAR didn’t give that last minute penalty.

“From our point of view, the road to mediocrity is still clouded in obstacles, false dawns and mistaken paths…”

Ben Cooper:

“A decent last 20 minutes of the first half saw United go in 1-0 up thanks to a Lascelles header.

“An insipid nufc second half saw Wolves dominate, equalise and nearly take a last minute win.

“Steve Bruce will probably be thankful that some poor reffing and the Longstaff sending off will take some of the spotlight away from a hapless second half that lacked effort and thought.

“Poor game as well.”

Brian Standen:

“Disappointing and half promising!

“Was it a red?

“1-0 up at half time and a chance to dominate. Unfortunately not!

“Disappointing Wolves team, apart from Traore….. great player!

“46,000, nope! Take 5k off that!

“Promising I said….. ASM again looks the part, that’s it!

“See you at West Ham.”

David Punton:

“Settling for a point against Wolves isn’t too bad, but it’s disappointing having taken the lead and not gone on to build on that Lascelles header, which was an emphatic finish to say the least.

“Wolves are a decent side. They’ve spent a lot of money.

“We find ourselves envying them.

“They played in Europe in midweek so that will have helped us a bit today and maybe it’s why we didn’t end up losing the game.

“A hard lesson for Sean Longstaff today with that red card.”

GToon;

“Dubravka is costing us an awful lot of points again this season.

“I can’t remember a worse goalkeeper over the past 30 years.

“Turning to the other end of the pitch: he can’t hold the ball up, he has no pace, he can’t head the ball, he can’t link up play or read a pass, he can’t shoot and he can’t be bothered closing their defenders down. Yeah, a bargain at £40m. Watching Joelinton gives me hope that at 52 I can still make it as a professional.

“In summary, we were lucky Wolves played on Thursday otherwise it would have ended in tears, yet again.”

Kieran Reynolds:

“Wolves are a good side and a point is not a terrible result for us but very frustrated by the way we let Wolves come back into the game during the second half.

“They will probably be disappointed to leave with only a point.

“Saint-Maximin was our best player but not much else to get excited about.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“A disappointing result but 1-1 probably a fair scoreline.

“No need for Longstaff to make that tackle and he will be a huge miss for the next few games.

“Another non-performance from Joelinton.

“We need to offer far more in the winnable home games.

“Not good enough.

“Saint-Maximin was bright again.”

Nat Seaton:

“At 75 minutes I asked myself, is Bruce happy with a draw at home against Wolves?

“The tactics second half were so negative.

“A strange lack of substitutions (before the sending off) didn’t help matters.

“All in all a point gained but on this performance and ‘managing’ you have to be concerned about what is to come…”

Steve Hickey:

“A game of two halves, neither very good on our behalf.

“Wolves changed formation and we had no answer to the new formation that seemed to be a 3-4-3 from half time.

“Joelinton and Almiron were ineffective as goal threats and once again we showed our strength in central defenders, we have 5 or 6 good ones.

“Pity the midfield and forwards weren’t as effective.

“Down by Christmas!”
