Mike Ashley has broken the fanbase – Intentional or not
If you have read anything written by me before, you will have no doubt about what my view is of Mike Ashley.
In short, I think he is a vindictive, greedy narcissist who gets a kick out of winding up Newcastle United fans, whilst making good money along the way.
He has had opportunities to make substantial money but has forfeited this in order to achieve his overall aim.
Just my opinion but I think he has not only dismantled the building blocks of our once proud club but has removed all hope, spirit and expectation of the supporters.
The crowds are starting to dwindle and although this will cost him money, along with huge losses through relegation, he thinks that the Ashley Model is the strategy to adopt.
There is no doubt we are relegation fodder, if not nailed on certainties…and his refusal to buy Rondon and keep Rafa, makes the Joelinton deal look even more bizarre.
We can’t score goals, have workmanlike young midfielders and suspect wing-backs. A recipe for disaster.
If we become detached at the bottom, that will be it. What does Ashley care?
In jest, Sunderland fans call him Secret Agent Ashley but hey you know what, they aren’t far wrong and here’s some evidence to back this up.
The list could be 10 times longer but I’ll stick to three examples of building the fans up to knock them back down.
Appointing legend Kevin Keegan to constructively dismiss him, court proven liar.
Excelling to 5th against all odds, only to squander that position through lack of investment.
The treatment of Rafa Benitez, when allowing investment in the squad to be guided by the Spaniard, would not only have kept a world class manager but would have made himself boat loads of money in the process. It was get rid of Benitez at any cost even if that is relegation and hire a workmanlike coach as a replacement. Swap a mid-table position for a relegation scrap.
Until now, the fans have still gone and have refused to be broken but this season is something new and he will gloat at this. I don’t blame anyone for staying away.
I have for the past 11 years but anyone thinking we are remotely close to chasing him away, is as deluded as Alan Pardew, Joe Kinnear or Steve Bruce. Only sustained failure with no income will make him think twice. Even then, he won’t give the club away for nothing like Sunderland.
Many think money is his motivator and this is partially true.
However, I would point to the fact that on numerous occasions he could have made substantially more but declined, due to spite and arrogance. Fabian Schar is living evidence of what he has decided to turn down in the shape of even bigger investments, £3.5m to £35m could have been dwarfed had Rafa Benitez been allowed to speculate to accumulate.
N.B. Once you stop going for a sustained period, you tend never to return (fact). Mike Ashley has broken the fanbase, intentional or not. I know what I think!
