Michael Owen says this ‘underlines the problems facing Newcastle’

Michael Owen has been looking ahead to Sunday’s game at the London Stadium.

Two teams desperate for a win to give them a lift.

Since 22 September, West Ham are without a win, with two draws and three defeats, including a 4-0 hammering by League One Oxford in the League Cup.

However, apart from the opening day when Man City bossed them, West Ham have led in all four PL home games, winning the first two but then allowing Palace to come back and win and Sheffield United to get a draw.

As for the visitors, Michael Owen points out: ‘Six goals in their first 10 league games of the season underlines the problems facing Newcastle’, which doesn’t tell the whole story. It isn’t just that Newcastle haven’t scored a lot of goals, it is the fact they struggle to even create chances.

The last four matches have seen a total of only four efforts on target, whilst before Jamaal Lascelles scored in the 37th minute against Wolves, Newcastle had scored only one goal in over eight hours of football.

West Ham have scored two goals in three of their last four home matches, if they do that on Saturday I don’t think many visiting fans will fancy our chances.

The Hammers have conceded 14 Premier League goals which might give a little bit of hope, though with Steve Bruce playing such negative tactics it probably won’t make any difference. In the last away match Newcastle faced a dodgy Chelsea defence that had conceded 14 goals in eight PL games and yet Newcastle rarely even crossed the halfway line, not having a single corner or effort on target.

Michael Owen predicts a draw but that is very unlikely to be enough to take Newcastle out of the relegation zone and with three of the next four games being away to West Ham & Villa and home to Man City (other game is home to Bournemouth), NUFC really could do with three points this weekend.

Steve Bruce has said this is the type of game where he expects Newcastle to be picking up points but to do so, we will surely need to see some enterprise shown in trying to get forward.

Michael Owen predicts Newcastle to neither score or pick up any point and West Ham to win 1-0. I think a lot of Newcastle fans are just hoping that this head coach and players can at least show that they have some kind of a plan as to how to create chances, anything more than that will be bonus.

Michael Owen talking to BetVictor:

“Six goals in their first 10 league games of the season underlines the problems facing Newcastle and they must do without the suspended Sean Longstaff at the London Stadium.

“West Ham have led against both Crystal Palace and Sheffield United in their last couple of home games but have ended up with just a solitary point.

“The Irons badly need a win to get their season back on track and one goal might be enough to separate the teams on Saturday.

“Tip: West Ham to win 1-0.”
