Match of The Day pundit compares Newcastle United duo to Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick

Paul Scholes is widely seen by many as the best English midfielder for some time, whilst at the same time maybe underrated by others.

An excellent range of passing and also trademark shooting, perfectly connecting and sending the ball skimming over the turf and into the back of the net.

When Manchester United were on the pitch on Sunday, Martin Keown showed impressive signs of a possible successor to that Paul Scholes style.

Happily though he was playing for the proper United, the one that was around years before the Manchester variety.

Keown thinks that after seeing him in action, Matty Longstaff should have been knocking on Steve Bruce’s door earlier and demanding a game.

The Match of The Day pundit saying that the Paul Scholes boots are big ones but that the 19 year old showed he could be capable of reaching that level.

Making his Premier League debut the midfielder was impressive in both passing and workrate but what really set Paul Scholes apart were the number of important goals he scored.

That Matty Longstaff strike from 25 yards all the way along the ground giving David De Gea no chance, not even Scholes could have hit it sweeter.

Sean Longstaff has already had Michael Carrick comparisons from others and Martin Keown mentioned it as well, saying Newcastle were far more disciplined on Sunday  but about the Longstaffs: ‘Those two definitely won them the  game.’

Martin Keown speaking about Matty Longstaff and brother Sean on Match of The Day 2 on Sunday night:

“The chance to play with your brother…

“The young lad should be knocking on Steve Bruce’s door and saying ‘Why didn’t you play me sooner?’

“He made more passes, he covered more distance, he really put in a performance.

“It was almost to say to the boss, ‘Hey, look at me, you have overlooked me for too long.’

“It was like a Paul Scholes…

“I know that’s big praise and they are big boots for him to copy, but him and his brother – Carrick, Scholes…you know, they did very well.

“And this is an important ingredient now in this Newcastle team, yes they were more disciplined but those two definitely won them the  game.”
