Massive blow as Newcastle’s best player set to miss Wolves game with new injury
Easily Newcastle’s best player this season, it is now bad news on Fabian Schar.
Thursday morning bringing news that the Swiss international picked up a knee injury at Chelsea and is very likely to miss the Wolves game and possibly more matches.
At Stamford Bridge, both Ciaran Clark and Fabian Schar were excellent, making numerous blocks, tackles and interceptions.
Indeed, as you can see from this table below, the season-long stats back up what our own eyes tell us, that Schar has been the key player so far.
The Other 14 is a Twitter account that specialises in stats and tables for the players and teams other than the ‘big 6’ in the English Premier League.
Here The Other 14 have come up with some great analysis and their latest is a table showing which players have made the most combined tackles and interceptions in the course of these opening nine Premier League games.
No surprise to see how well Leicester are doing when they have the top two players in this table.
Fabian Schar is (joint) eighth top of this table but when it comes to interceptions alone, only two have made more than the Newcastle defender, who is so good at reading the game and initiating many of Newcastle’s not great number of attacks.
Last season the stats were overwhelming, with 41 points won in Fabian Schar’s 24 Premier League appearances, whilst only four points were added in the 14 matches where he wasn’t involved.
If indeed Fabian Schar is ruled out on Sunday, here’s hoping it isn’t a lasting absence.
Interesting to see what Steve Bruce does if Schar does miss out, both in terms of whether he keeps the three/five at the back and who he selects to play.
