Is Jamaal Lascelles adding too much expectation with comments ahead of Chelsea?

Jamaal Lascelles has had a bit of an up and down season so far in these first 10 weeks of the campaign.

With only really Fabian Schar and Martin Dubravka showing any decent level of consistency, Newcastle fans are still waiting for the team to show they have what it takes to make this a comfortable season.

Most worrying of all was the lack of effort in some games, with even Steve Bruce publicly calling out unnamed members of his side after the games against Leicester and Norwich.

Talking to Sky Sports ahead of the Chelsea match, Jamaal Lascelles has picked out the impact of Matty Longstaff as one of the main reasons why Newcastle bounced back against Man Utd in the last game.

We have all enjoyed seeing a local lad put in such a promising promising display in his second game for the first team but I think we should be careful of expecting too much.

There are these next two games before Isaac Hayden is available after suspension, so with Shelvey and Ki showing nothing, the 19 year old midfielder has surely at least these next two games to try and keep that momentum and adrenaline rush going from that Man Utd game.

Jamaal Lascelles compares Matty Longstaff to spending fortunes on overseas players and of course we all would love as many local through the ranks players in the first team.

It is only one game though and we need the other players in the team to take more responsibility, especially when it comes to creating chances and taking them, so that anything we get from Matty is a bonus.

Sadly, the team have already shown how flaky they are capable of being this season, so whatever the result at Chelsea, we need a performance, then to carry that through for a run of games, not just a one-off.

The reality is that with young players coming into the team, you never know how long that initial adrenaline rush is going to sustain them.

We have already seen Sean Longstaff struggling to reach the heights of last season when he first came into the team, although recovering from injury won’t have helped.

Manchester United were woeful last time out and Chelsea will be a much tougher proposition but this season they are a team who as well as scoring plenty goals (18 – third highest in PL), also concede plenty (14 – fourth highest in PL).

Can the Longstaff brothers help the team fire and score more than one goal for the first time this season, as that is surely needed if the team are to get anything from Saturday.

Jamaal Lascelles speaking to Sky Sports:

“I am buzzing for him (Matty Longstaff).

“Since pre-season, he has come into the squad and he is top of running.

“He is really fit, he works hard and all of that hard work has paid off for him.

“He has been thrown into the deep end, pretty similar to his brother last year.

“Matty is only 19 but what you do know is he is a young Geordie lad who is going to roll his sleeves up and play with his heart.

“I think straight after the Leicester game we needed players to be like that and he’s a prime example of what you can get from that.

“On top of that, he got us a goal, and ultimately his goal got us the three points.

“I am over the moon for him.

“You see all these big teams signing players for millions and millions of pounds from across seas and everywhere else. Matty Longstaff was not long ago training down with the reserve team and just coming up through the ranks.

“He has managed to grab a first team spot and he has grabbed it with two hands and done a fantastic job.

“He is humble, a very nice genuine lad, it must mean the world to him so I’m really happy.”
