Gary Neville distraught after Newcastle United expose just how bad Manchester United are
Gary Neville is about as professional as Mark Lawrenson when it comes to separating his professional life as a pundit/expert and that of a player/fan.
After watching Manchester United sink to 12th after being a poor second best to a weak Newcastle United, his emotions were clearly exposed.
Gary Neville declaring that Manchester United have ‘taken a step backwards’ and the ‘quality is not right’…
Newcastle fans were ecstatic with the win but at the same time recognised that this is the poorest Manchester United anybody has seen in a long time, making their worst start to a league season in 30 years.
Gary Neville says that after messing up their recruitment over the space of many years, for Manchester United’s hierarchy ‘It is going to be painful and the board are going to need to hold their nerve.’
After raking in a lot of money from sales in the summer and clearing some massive earners off the wage bill. Gary Neville says that now they have to back Solskjaer with serious money.
For Manchester United fans, they will be wondering if the Norwegian should be sacked, never mind get a fortune to spend on players.
At Newcastle we still have plenty problems of our own but it is never a bad day when you see Gary Neville and Manchester United in so much pain.
Gary Neville speaking to Sky Sports:
“The quality is not right, they [Manchester United] have taken a step backwards.
“They would be better off with Fellaini up front with Lukaku, Sanchez up front, there is no doubt…
‘They now need to fix a style…fix a way of recruiting.
“It is going to be painful and the board are going to need to hold their nerve.
“They have messed it up over many years.
“They [the Manchester United board] are responsible for the poor recruitment.
“They have gone for a completely different style of manager.
‘They have now gone with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and a completely different style.
“If you change direction every two years and invest £250million along the way with each manager, then you are going to have problems.
“Manchester United are now getting the pain that they deserve, for poor decisions at board level.
“Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to make sure that the clean up job that he is doing, which needs to be done for the mess that has gone before him, he has to make sure that he gets the opportunity to spend that £250million that the others have had to spend.
“So that he can have an opportunity.
‘There are things out there that I liked.
“I liked Tuanzebe and Maguire, there is the bones of a partnership there.
“Put five or six players of real quality in there.
“They need to recruit well.
‘They got £75m for Lukaku.
“They got Smalling, Herrera, Sanchez and Fellaini all off the wage bill and they [Manchester United] probably invested about £40m.
‘That is not going to be enough to correct what has gone before.
“The club is paying for poor recruitment but some of the players that have been signed have been good players.
“However, if their character isn’t right then it is [still] a bad signing.”
