Garth Crooks selects surprise Newcastle United player in his team of the week after Wolves draw

Garth Crooks has picked his best 11 performers from the weekend’s action.

The Premier League team of the weekend that has most impressed him.

Included in his top 11 is one player from the game at St James Park.

Going into Sunday’s game, Newcastle hadn’t won a single Premier League match in the past 17 months without Fabian Schar playing.

Despite that still being the case, Garth Crooks has picked another Newcastle defender in his PL team of the week.

The BBC Sport pundit choosing Jamaal Lascelles after he scored the goal that looked as it was going to give Newcastle a much needed three points.

Garth Crooks talks about a ‘resurgence’ at Newcastle United ‘after a poor start to the season’ but I wished I shared his optimism, with only two wins all season from 11 games it doesn’t really look that way for me.

Steve Bruce has now equalled the all-time NUFC record for fewest goals (six) in the opening 10 league matches of a season and yet again on Sunday, Newcastle very rarely looked like scoring. They had two efforts on target including the Lascelles goal and that makes only four on target in these past four matches.

Lascelles ok against Wolves but it was actually Fernandez who I thought was top man at the back, plus he showed the rest of the team how to cross a ball with the brilliant assist. How good the defending of the team actually was, is open to question, as in the second half Wolves created a handful of very good chances and could/should have taken all three points.

Garth Crooks explains why he picked Jamaal Lascelles in his Premier League team of the week and then the full eleven are listed below:

Jamaal Lascelles:

“After a poor start to the season Newcastle responded to some very sharp criticism.

“Their performance away at Spurs was probably the catalyst to their resurgence.

“Leadership has been the key both on and off the pitch.

“Jamaal Lascelles has been quite brilliant in that department for Newcastle.

“He takes responsibility in defence and is not afraid to attack in the opponent’s box.

“Wolves, on the other hand, looked the better side in the second half but Newcastle held the fort and with 10 men.

Newcastle displayed plenty of bottle.

“Did you know?

“Lascelles has made more clearances (48) and more headed clearances (23) than any other Newcastle player in the Premier League this term.”

Ederson (Man City)

Trent Alexander-Arnold (Liverpool)

Harry Maguire (Man Utd)

Jamaal Lascelles (Newcastle United)

Christian Pulisic (Chelsea)

Mateo Kovacic (Chelsea)

Ilkay Gundogan (Man City)

Scott McTominay (Man Utd)

Ayoze Perez (Leicester)

Sadio Mane (Liverpool)

Jamie Vardy (Leicester)
