Frank Lampard gives injury/fitness updates on 5 Chelsea players for the Newcastle United game

Frank Lampard has had an interesting time since making the step up to his first Premier League job at Chelsea.

Since arriving back at Stamford Bridge after starting in management at Derby County,  in their 11 games (all competitions), Chelsea have won six, drawn two and lost three.

A transfer ban complicating things and helping to make the decision easier to give a lot of younger players their chance.

Certainly the Chelsea fans can’t complain about the entertainment factor (which they have done with other recent managers), as there have been a massive 44 goals in their 11 games, an average of four per game. The blues have scored 27 goals and the opposition 17 so far.

However, it is getting to a key part of the season now for a busy club like Chelsea who have aspirations of winning stuff. Following the Newcastle game, Lampard’s team face six games spread only 17 days apart, three Premier League games, a League Cup clash clash against Man Utd and a double header with Ajax which could well settle their chances either way of getting out of their Champions League group.

So the Frank Lampard press conference was always going to be interesting for Newcastle (and Chelsea) fans, seeing who would be on the pitch tomorrow.

Chelsea had a number of players with existing injuries/knocks and others on international duties reported to have picked up the same.

On Friday afternoon Frank Lampard updated on injuries/fitness for the Newcastle game at his press conference:

Kante  ruled out with ‘small’ groin injury.

Kovacic has been in training and is now back in contention.

Barkley is fit to play if selected.

Christensen out for two weeks with a hamstring injury after picking up injury on international duty.

Rudiger now training outside with the physios but not in contention for Newcastle.
