Elias Sorensen gets first goal on loan at Carlisle

Elias Sorensen hasn’t had the best of times at Carlisle United so far.

The Newcastle loan striker having only made one start and four sub appearances in League Two, a total of 122 minutes on the pitch.

Last season the young striker scored for fun early in the season but then struggled to even get on the pitch when going on loan at Blackpool.

Rafa Benitez recalling him early due to the lack of opportunities.

No sign of that yet this season but of course Newcastle fans hoping to see Elias Sorensen getting more opportunities in the near future.

On Tuesday after noon, the 20 year has seen his confidence boosted with a first goal for Carlisle, albeit in a friendly.

Playing in a Carlisle 11 v Rangers 11, Sorensen played well and set Carlisle on their way to a 2-1 victory with an excellent finish to open the scoring.

From the official Carlisle United match report:

‘But it was United who took a one-goal lead into the break as Sorensen showed great skill when he controlled the ball as it came into the box. It was at a tight angle but his initial deft touch was followed by a drilled thunderbolt which flew into the bottom corner.’

Whilst the official Carlisle Twitter feed backed up his performance:

23′ Very tight game this. Our defence looks solid and Sorensen is having an excellent first half of the first half up front, mobile and linking play – still 0-0

32′ Flowing United move sparked by string work from Loft. He held the ball up, under pressure from two defenders, spread wide to Birch who crossed on the run. Had to be put behind before Sorensen pounced

44′ GOOOAAALLLL United – Sorensen.

44′ And what a goal it was. Ball came in from the right flank, the striker took a touch, held his man off and strode forward to make space. Tight angle, but he left Firth with no chance with a low drilled effort which zipped into the bottom corner.

That’s half time – tight game, could still go either way, but a real moment of quality separates the sides heading into the break

69′ Superb break Carlisle – Armstrong with a neat 40-yard ball up the right hand touchline which sent Sorensen on a run. He left his man for dead, and a cute pass picked out Loft. He lost his footing as he tried to place his shot and it bobbled wide – great chance

87′ Oh my word, what a run from Sorensen. That deserved a goal. Took it on the halfway line, dragged it back and off he went. Beat two, shot as he reached the edge of the box, great save from Firth

That’s full time – RangersFC 1 – 2 United – very good contest that. We defended well, the midfield looked calm and the forwards were lively. Two good goals and a decent victory well earned.
