Chris Sutton calls out Miguel Almiron for alleged cheating
Chris Sutton has been talking about Miguel Almiron.
The BBC Sport pundit discussing the Newcastle attacking player’s contribution.
Sutton caustically commenting that Almiron ‘has more dives than goals this season’…
On the opening day of the season, the Paraguayan international was booked for diving against Arsenal when trying to win a penalty.
However, things have escalated in the past week.
Against Manchester United, Miguel Almiron picked up his second Premier League booking of the season for diving when in a good position.
Then on Thursday night, he picked up yet another yellow for doing the same.
Miguel Almiron had picked up a yellow card for dissent in the 43rd minute when Paraguay had a goal disallowed in their friendly against Serbia.
Then the Newcastle player dropped to the ground embarrassingly in the 54th minute, that second yellow added up to a red.
Once again it was so unnecessary, Miguel Almiron had made a great run and Paraguay had three against two as he raced into the box but chose to drop to the ground when a player put his hand on his chest with the faintest of touches. If Almiron had stayed on his feet there was every chance they would have taken the lead.
Nobody wants to see any player cheating, especially for their own club, something that is especially stupid now that VAR has belatedly arrived in the Premier League.
It pains me to agree with anything Chris Sutton has to say but on this one, Miguel Almiron hasn’t got a leg to stand on, especially if he already thrown himself onto the floor…
As Newcastle fans we can’t complain and slag off players of other clubs when they do it, if we are not prepared to acknowledge when one of our own is indulging in this kind of behaviour.
Here’s hoping that red card for Paraguay has woken Almiron up to what he needs to really focus on.
Chris Sutton speaking to BBC Radio Five Live:
“Miguel Almiron has more dives than goals this season.
“He has not scored.
“[but] He goes top of the table [for diving].
“Almiron, you are better than that.
“What is going on with players?
“They are not listening, [as I said] you are better than that Almiron.
“Let’s see goals, let’s see a goal…
“Let’s not see dives…the simulation.”
