Chelsea fans comments show big fear factor ahead of facing Newcastle United – Bizarre

These comments from Chelsea fans before the Newcastle match are pretty bizarre.

Despite a team scoring goals for fun and potentially going as high as second with a win today, they have a massive fear factor about today’s match.

Chelsea have won this fixture a massive 17 times in the Premier League era and Newcastle have only won once at Stamford Bridge in the PL, yet so many Chelsea fans are so worried ahead of today’s game.

It is defending set-pieces where they see the biggest problems.

Yet the only set-piece Newcastle have scored from this season, is when Ashley Young’s corner ended up with Newcastle breaking and scoring the winner against Man Utd.

There is a real smell of fear from the Chelsea fans with Andy Carroll, fearing him in the air, yet most neutrals would probably anticipate Chelsea being at least two or three up before Carroll might come off the bench today.

Also, with Newcastle having had the least possession, touches in the opposition box and chances created, of all Premier League clubs, that fear of Andy Carroll scoring for fun from crosses into the box looks a little far-fetched.

Nevertheless, I hope this fear factor has also spread to the Chelsea team and Andy Carroll and/or Joelinton can get the service and do some damage.

Comments from Chelsea fans via their Shed End and CFC Net message boards:

‘Carroll in the air is a nightmare and he is just about fit now. ‘

‘Worrisome. I foresee an Andy Carroll special. I reckon Newcastle can/will get two two to three goals through set pieces as they are a big side and specialise in that old fashioned English way of playing under Bruce.’

So you think newcastle will score 3 times from set pieces?

I admit it is a danger, and our track record this year isn’t good, but to concede 3 in one game from set pieces against a poor team would take some doing, even for us.’

‘I barely see Newcastle crossing over the halfway line often unless we play poorly.’

‘I am not saying Newcastle are fantastic and I expect us to score but the way we have been defending set pieces and with big units like Joelinton and Carroll running about, full prepped for us, I am not seeing a walk over nor a clean sheet.’

‘I expect Carroll will make an appearance, hopefully we are a couple of goals ahead when he does.’

‘I think we will win though might be close.

They beat Utd after going back to last season’s formation of 3CBs, might give them a bit of belief.

I wonder who will mark Carroll from set pieces?’

‘It seems that Newcastle have been a bit of a bogey team for us, since the 2010 season when they binned us 3-0 in the League Cup. followed by a couple draws then a string of losses up at their place too.

Andy Carroll will be a handful and they’ve just beat UTD so will be as confident as we are.’

‘They’ve always been a bit of a bogey team for us, and they did just beat Utd.. But then again it is Utd so probably doesnt mean anything. Hope to keep the good form rolling in.’

‘Living in the toon myself it’ll be a tough one to take if we don’t win this, but I reckon their big display was against United, they’re a dreadful team so if we have any sort of form we should be tonking them on home turf. Don’t fancy us to keep many clean sheets this season, but i’m going to make a bold prediction and say we’ll win this 4-0.’

‘Think they will 100% play Andy Carroll against our defence and hope to win as many frees and corners as possible.’

‘If this was away I would be a lot more nervous since they love taking points off us up there, but at home we should beat them. Then again our home form has been poor this season, they’ve been impressive against the top 6 but they’re full of problems and realistically we should be winning this.’

‘For a big guy Andy Carroll isn’t that effective in the air to be honest, as for Newcastle we have more than enough to sweep them aside pretty comfortably.’

‘Never fancy games after the International break especially when the other team that has very few internationals has the entire time to prepare for the game. Bruce will play 5 at the back and smother the middle hoping for the break away or set piece…this may be a tough game to win….I’ll hope for a narrow 1-0 victory.’

‘I don’t think this will be easy I can see Newcastle trying to frustrate us. They will most definitely try to make use of our defensive fragility by trying to score from set pieces.’

‘We’ve got 3 midfielders out, very unfortunate. Looks like we’re going to have to go with Barkley in the middle again.’

‘They have 14 days to prepare we have 2 days. obligatory carroll header. we need to score first and score fast otherwise we will be in big trouble.’

‘I would be a little surprised if Barkley doesn’t start this one. At home against lower table opposition, off the back of a confidence boosting week.

I think Frank will see this as an ideal moment to see if he can build some momentum from Barkley.’

‘Barkley has consistently played well against bad sides, both for England and in the Europa League. We need to pick the team that is most likely to get us 3 points. There’s no way he is in that. As soon as the transfer ban is over he should be the first one out the door.’
