Chelsea 1 Newcastle 0 – Match ratings and comments on all NUFC players
We asked Michael Bennett to give us his match ratings after Chelsea Newcastle 0.
Steve Bruce watching on as Newcastle failed to have a single corner or effort on target.
The odd time Newcastle did press early on, the Chelsea defenders showed why they had already conceded 14 goals in eight Premier League games and only kept one clean sheet.
Steve Bruce claimed Newcastle ‘had some unbelievable opportunities’ in the first half but that is very much stretching it and on the verge of being delusional.
Michael Bennett gives us his NUFC player ratings and comments.
Dubravka – 7
Could potentially possibly have saved Alonso’s effort.
However, kept the score down with some excellent saves and probably man of the match for Newcastle.
Clark – 7
Another decent display by the defender.
Put in some great challenges and as always, didn’t let Newcastle down.
Lascelles – 6
Didn’t do too bad but not as well as the other two centre-backs.
Gave away some unnecessary free-kicks.
Schar – 7
Probably Newcastle’s best outfield players.
Some excellent blocks and interceptions as Chelsea piled forward.
Yedlin – 5
Got a bit of a run around at times by the excellent Hudson-Odoi.
Only second start after injury and stuck to his task.
Willems – 4
I can hardly remember him touching the ball.
Contributed nothing gong forward and suspect in defence once again, Matt Ritchie is badly missed.
M. Longstaff – 5
Back down to earth.
Plenty of effort but along with his brother was given the run around, especially in the second half.
A lack of pace exposed as Willian in particular was running past him with ease.
Interesting to see how Steve Bruce reacts with his team selection at home to Wolves next weekend, hopefully Matty gets another chance.
S. Longstaff – 6
Did a little better than his sibling but Newcastle had minimal control in midfield.
Today put into context the daft talk about England, as both Longstaff brothers need to be allowed to get on and just concentrate on developing their Newcastle careers.
The likes of Hudson-Odoi and Mount showed a far higher level and proof of why it is they who are in the England squad.
Almiron – 5
A thankless task yet again as the Paraguayan is asked to play so deep.
So when the ball did occasionally break for him, it was usually closer to Newcastle’s penalty area than the halfway line.
Yes he could have done better but had any number of Chelsea players in front of him usually when getting the ball.
Saint-Maximin – 6
Newcastle’s only threat but given little help by those around him.
Burned brightly a few times early on when his pace and pressing caused Chelsea to panic but Steve Bruce’s usual negative tactics and formation make it so difficult for our attacking players.
Faded in the second half which was no surprise as Newcastle had so little of the ball.
Joelinton – 4
A totally thankless task.
Spends more time closer to his own penalty area than Chelsea’s.
Not sure what the plan was, or whether it even existed, in terms of how Newcastle were trying to score a goal.
It would be interesting to know the Brazilian’s thoughts on playing in a team where he is so starved of the ball and support.
Carroll – 4 Contributed nothing apart from a bizarre and almost disastrous 30 yard back pass that almost gave Chelsea the chance to score a second.
Atsu – Not on long enough.
Gayle – Not on long enough.
