Chelsea 1 Newcastle 0 – Saturday 19 October 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle losing at Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Jamie Swan:

“No points from a game where we didn’t register a shot on target.

“Not a big surprise really, neither the defeat or yet another game where we didn’t threaten.

“The inevitable will always happen if you have less potency than a bromide swilling asexual-eunuch with a bit of a headache.

“This lack of threat and in particular from our £64m pair of Miggy and Joelinton mean we are always facing this type of struggle, whether Chelsea, Watford or whoever.

“Not a disastrous performance, but the inability to retain possession for more than two seconds and the impotence already mentioned – is going to be the pi.. on our chips all season.

“Frustrating, as Chelsea are not all that neither.”

Paul Patterson:

“The stats show a mauling and not a shot on target all game.

“It’s the same problem as previous weeks we WON’T score enough goals this season and let’s be clear- Joelinton is NOT a striker.

“Once again, expecting three teams to be worse than we are is the club policy.”

Jamie Smith:

“Can’t complain about the result at a ground we never get anything at and never looked like scoring at today.

“Chelsea will feel robbed by the narrow scoreline.

“For perspective, 9 games has brought 5 of the erstwhile “big six” plus the ominous trip to Leicester.

“However, it’s the other 3 games that have caused concern as we have looked toothless against so called lesser teams.

“This needs to change starting next week as concerns about Joelinton in particular and the gameplay overall are going to grow if we don’t use the relative fixture despite to haul ourselves up the table.”

David Punton:

“Dogged defending but a bit toothless.

“Stamford Bridge has been slim pickings for us in the Premier League era and that played out today.

“Albeit we’ve come away losing narrowly and not on the receiving end of a hammering.

“Back into the bottom three tonight.

“Much work lies ahead of these players and the manager too.”

Ben Cooper:

“Played ok first half.

“Defended well, limited Chelsea and broke with purpose.

“Second half got absolutely battered and but for some great defending by the three centre halves and keeper and one unbelievable stop by Yedlin the score would have been more convincing.

“Dubravka will be disappointed by the goal but he made plenty of saves.

“If Steve Bruce is looking for negatives then not creating any good chances in the game and Joelinton and Carroll being completely ineffective should be top of his list.

“Tough afternoon for the brothers who were run ragged but like the rest of the team they never gave up and what United lack in quality they at least tried to make up for with effort.”

Nat Seaton:

“It was backs to the wall for most of the game and I can’t remember us having a shot on target so we can’t really say we were unlucky.

“Back into the bottom three where I think we will be spending quite a lot of time this season, lets hope not in May…”
