Charlie Nicholas makes two quite extraordinary claims about Newcastle United
Charlie Nicholas has been talking about Newcastle United.
The Sky Sports pundit discussing various issues ahead of the game at the London Stadium on Saturday.
A West Ham team who have won none of their last five games, up against a Newcastle side struggling to create any chances never mind scoring goals.
Surely it is guaranteed to be a classic!
Charlie Nicholas makes a couple of extraordinary statements about Newcastle United and what has happened so far this season.
The first one: ‘I think Steve Bruce has done a fabulous job at Newcastle.’
Quite unbelievable. Some Newcastle fans go over the top the other way but no need for Charlie Nicholas to go so deluded in the other direction.
Fair enough say something along the lines of Steve Bruce doing his best in difficult circumstances but what part of this is fabulous? Two wins in 11 games and the joint lowest ever goals total in the first 10 league games in Newcastle’s entire history! The football is terrible to watch and we hardly create any chances, whilst to have nine points on the level of performances has been so so lucky.
What if Newcastle were mid-table, would Nicholas be nominating Steve Bruce for a knighthood?
The second mind blowing thing that the Sky Sports pundit claims is that ‘Newcastle’s away record is good.’
A shame he gives no explanation/reasoning for this….
The bottom line is that Newcastle have lost four of their five away games so far, scoring three goals and conceding 12.
What’s more, is that it is over four and a half hours of football since Newcastle had a shot on target at an away game and only one corner in the last five hours of away football.
Taking home and away form together, in over eight hours of football before Jamaal Lascelles scored on Sunday, Newcastle had scored only one goal.
Despite the ‘fabulous job’ Steve Bruce has done and Newcastle’s ‘good’ away record, Charlie Nicholas predicts a West Ham side who have won none of their last five games (including hammered 4-0 by Oxford in the League Cup) to come out on top 2-1. Work that one one.
Charlie Nicolas talking to Sky Sports:
“I watched the West Ham game last week.
“Robert Snodgrass was very good in particular.
“Andriy Yarmolenko was a bit off with his final ball, and Sebastien Haller didn’t get the service he should have got, although I do like him.
“There is always the tendency at home that West Ham become a bit tense, but they should be burying these teams.
“Against Sheffield United they battered them for 20 minutes and never really made anything, while they scored the first goal but never held on.
“I think Steve Bruce has done a fabulous job at Newcastle.
“He doesn’t have two up front to play and he loves playing with two strikers.
“Everything he has had to build, he has done so from the back, so they have to go back to front, but Newcastle’s away record is good – they will frustrate them but West Ham will just edge it.
“Prediction is West Ham 2 Newcastle 1.”
