On Monday we brought you news of the Sunderland fans filmed singing a sick song about Gary Speed dying.

The Sunderland owner Stewart Donald promising (see below) that he would be taking action against those involved.

Now a Sunderland supporter has been in touch with The Mag to give his view of what the typical Sunderland fan is saying about the issue.

This is what Sunderland fan Hughie has written:

As a long standing SAFC supporter of 50 years, I just have to voice my opinion on the sickening chants of our so called “fans” regarding Gary Speed.

I know both sets of supporters have sick elements who will stoop to any level to hurt each other, but this is a new low.

I will never forget the video clip I watched of the NUFC fans singing “There’s only one Bradley Lowery,” and it was genuinely touching.

There is no room at either club for sick minded individuals who seem to revel in torturous personal misfortune and I urge genuine fans from both sides to root out and report anyone they know involved with such vile chanting.

By all means let’s be vociferous in our support.

If need be, let’s laugh at each other misfortunes, but please, please do not cross the line, lest we become people and followers with no moral compass between us. Enough is enough.

The Mag – 23 September 2019:

After Sunderland fans were seen on video singing a song about Gary Speed on social media, club owner Stewart Donald was challenged about it.

Donald condemned the Sunderland fans, calling them sick.

The Sunderland fans were said to have been filmed on the way to Bolton at the weekend for their League One match.

Difficult to believe but the Sunderland supporters involved laughing as they sang a song about Gary Speed committing suicide.

We are not going to further circulate the video footage here but it is sadly still available to be seen on the internet/social media.

It is sad to see anything like this, no matter which club the fans support. If it was Newcastle fans singing anything on a similar subject then happy to condemn that as well.

It is like anybody still thinking it funny mocking Man Utd or Liverpool fans with chants/songs that cross the line about Munich and Hillsborough.

However, disappointed that this isn’t a new/one-off thing from Sunderland fans, as a quick internet search turned up videos of Mackems singing  this same Gary Speed song in pubs before/after matches back in 2013 and 2014, so clearly not a new thing.

You pity the mentality of people who think it ok to post vile stuff anonymously on social media but what kind of person would be happy, even proud, to be seen singing this Gary Speed song in front of a whole pub/bus full of people?

We all have parents, partners, siblings, grandparents, friends and so on, imagine if such a tragedy had happened to somebody who you loved and others thought it was something to make a big joke out of?

Stewart Donald via Twitter:

“It is shocking.

“I have seen it and I absolutely gutted.

“It is unacceptable, unjustifiable, wrong, hurtful and embarrassing.

“Gary Speed’s poor family deserve support and understanding and to abuse such a tragic event is simply wrong and sick.

“I’m sorry and I’m on it.”
