Steve Bruce reacts after less than 40,000 watch Newcastle 0 Brighton 0 with NUFC 29% possession

Steve Bruce watched on as his side were so lucky to come away with a point against Brighton.

An official attendance of 43,360 but in reality it was crystal clear that there was actually less than 40,000 who had actually bothered to turn up to watch this dross.

An embarrassing performance saw the usual negative Bruce tactics with Newcastle defending so deep.

Going into this game, Newcastle were averaging only 33% possession in their six games so far this season.

Only 29% possession at home to Brighton is quite frankly unacceptable.

Only when Allan Saint-Maximin came on in the 73rd minute did we see any life at all or real attacking intent from Newcastle.

So often we have Newcastle players telling us how great Steve Bruce is and/or training/life is so much better than under Rafa Benitez.

Some of them should have a serious look at themselves after this woeful display, with Jonjo Shelvey a prime candidate.

Steve Bruce claims ‘we changed a few things and if anyone was going to win the game I thought it would be us.’

That is taking a very very selective view of this game and apart from ASM it was really still only a lot of huff and puff even at the end, the Brighton keeper not having a serious save to make in the final stages.

Steve Bruce states that ‘The Achilles heel is that we have to take big chances when we get them.’

Well I’m sorry but it will be the visitors today who will be absolutely kicking themselves, as with a bit more composure they would won at a canter.

Steve Bruce:

“We found it very difficult.

“We knew Brighton would come and want to take the football and basically we couldn’t get after it well enough.

“In the second half we changed a few things and if anyone was going to win the game I thought it would be us.

“The Achilles heel is that we have to take big chances when we get them.

“We couldn’t wait to get them in at half-time.

“We didn’t deal with Brighton who kept the ball very well and they made it a difficult evening for us.

“We got away with one.”
