Steve Bruce press conference – 5 ruled out for Brighton but positive news on 3 Newcastle players
Steve Bruce has taken his pre-Brighton press conference.
The NUFC head coach meeting journalists early Friday morning before training.
Only the sixth Premier League game of the season but it is looking a massive match for the two clubs currently filling 16th and 18th places.
As usual, injuries and fitness dominate much of the talk and two big bits of news today.
Steve Bruce talking at his pre-Brighton press conference:
“A fit and firing Andy Carroll will be great for us.
“We have seen an upturn in training because he has been out there, you can feel it.
“There aren’t many like him…
“We all know that if Andy stays fit then he’s a wonderful, wonderful centre forward.
“Certainly of his type I don’t think there’s been anybody better in the last 8-10 years when he’s been playing.
“A fit Andy Carroll is going to be huge and great for us going forward.
“As long as he (Allan Saint-Maximin) comes through today then he’s in contention as well.
“As long as he (Andy Carroll) comes through today okay – touch wood he will – he will be involved, which is good news at the top end of the pitch.
“Certainly the return of Andy and Allan Saint-Maximin will give us something that can only benefit us.
“Sean Longstaff’s not going to make it unfortunately – maybe the end of next week (then Matt Ritchie a week later).
“Fabian Schar’s okay, it was cramp, so that’s good news for us.
“The only way I can get people thinking positively is if we can produce a few results. Now we’ve got a wonderful opportunity tomorrow to go and get our second win of the season.
“Brighton have had a total change of philosophy and style under their new manager.
“They’re probably going through that transition.
“They had a wonderful start (at Watford) when they won 3-0 away from home; they’re a good side, they’ve got good players.
“That’s the Premier League.”
So by my reckoning, that means Fabian Schar is fit for tomorrow to start, whilst Carroll and ASM will also be included in the squad but surely the bench at best.
Which then leaves the following still missing through injury/lack of full fitness: Matt Ritchie, Sean Longstaff, DeAndre Yedlin, Florian Lejuene, Dwight Gayle.
