Rob Lee tells Newcastle United fans when they can start criticising Steve Bruce

Rob Lee has been talking about the situation at Newcastle United and in particular, the position of Steve Bruce.

The former NUFC midfielder/winger thinks that criticism of the Head Coach is ‘unjust’ at the minute.

Rob Lee saying that Bruce has to be given until Christmas and then it could/would be fair for him to get stick if things have gone badly.

Lee has gone down the route of saying that it is all pretty much about being a replacement for Rafa Benitez: ‘There is nobody really that Newcastle could have brought in after Benitez that would have been immune because the fans loved Rafa.’

I agree up to a point but to bring in yet another manager/head coach from the lower divisions, who no other Premier league club would have employed, mean that the decision to employ Steve Bruce was always rightfully going to be criticised. As for criticism for Steve Bruce himself, I think very few fans at matches have given him any stick and in the final analysis if he wins matches that will make him.

However, fans are right to point out that nothing in Bruce’s 20+ years CV suggests that he is capable of doing the job. Particularly when most of the last decade has been spent in the Championship.

Rob Lee speaking to the Chronicle:

“He [Steve Bruce] does get a lot of criticism and it is unjust.

“Criticise him after Christmas if he hasn’t gone well for sure but not now.

“I think he has found himself in this situation because he has replaced Rafa Benitez.

“Who wouldn’t take some flak after that?

“There is nobody really that Newcastle could have brought in after Benitez that would have been immune because the fans loved Rafa.

“I have always said that the best managers at Newcastle have been Kevin Keegan and Bobby Robson.

“They got the area, the people and the fans, they understood what it meant and I think Steve Bruce does as well.

“I don’t care if he managed Sunderland. So what. He has seen the opportunity of managing the club he idolised as a boy and he took it.

“Another reason that will lead to criticism of Bruce is the situation with the owner.

“He’ll face problems, he’s not stupid.

“His major problem will be what he is promised by the owner and what he will actually get.

“That’s the situation every manager has found themselves in with this owner.

“They may have signed Joelinton but they actually sold Perez for £30m. They are still balancing the books.”
