Predicted Newcastle team v Brighton after Steve Bruce fitness updates

The Newcastle team v Brighton will be a testing selection for Steve Bruce.

The NUFC Head Coach trying to win his first ever game at St James Park as  head coach.

Losing to both Arsenal and Leicester, then that poor display and draw against Watford.

Friday morning saw Steve Bruce give the following update on injuries and fitness:

“A fit Andy Carroll is going to be huge and great for us going forward.

“As long as he (Allan Saint-Maximin) comes through today then he’s in contention as well.

“As long as he (Andy Carroll) comes through today okay – touch wood he will – he will be involved, which is good news at the top end of the pitch.

“Certainly the return of Andy and Allan Saint-Maximin will give us something that can only benefit us.

“Sean Longstaff’s not going to make it unfortunately – maybe the end of next week (then Matt Ritchie a week later).

“Fabian Schar’s okay, it was cramp, so that’s good news for us.”

So Matt Ritchie, Dwight Gayle, DeAndre Yedlin, Sean Longstaff and Florian Lejeune set to be the five who are definitely missing.

Better news on Schar, Carroll and Saint-Maximin.

Despite being at fault for the second goal, Dubravka will obviously start against Brighton, with only 67 goals conceded in 55 Premier League starts he is a class above the other goalkeeping options.

Whilst Willems did relatively ok going forward and scored that goal against Liverpool, both he and Krafth continue to struggle defensively.

With Ritchie still not available that appears to rubber stamp Willems’ place and I’m guessing Steve Bruce will persist with Krafth, although I would be tempted to put Manquillo in. He’s not great but has done ok when playing most recently.

With it only being cramp last weekend for Schar, he and Lascelles & Dummett appear certain to continue as the three centre-backs.

Longstaff’s continued absence seems to give Shelvey another chance, despite being so poor this season so far. Particularly with it being a winnable home game Steve Bruce is bound to hope the midfielder can come good, the only other option Ki, who doesn’t exactly inspire either.

Joelinton is a sure starter but what about the other two positions?

Earlier today Steve Bruce talked about not ruling out potentially this season playing a front three of Carroll, Joelinton and Saint-Maximin.

That surely won’t be against Brighton tomorrow though.

Andy Carroll hasn’t stepped onto a pitch for seven months and has started only three Premier League games in 20 months, so surely no way he will start.

The same with Allan Saint-Maximin. Bruce blundered by playing the winger at Spurs after he returned from injury to full training just 48 hours before that Tottenham game, leading to an even worse injury only 17 minutes in.

So surely far better having the pair on the bench as possible impact subs.

Which then appears to leave us with Atsu and Almiron continuing.

The only potential alternative appears to be Muto and he was as poor as ever when coming off the bench at Liverpool.

Which gives me this predicted Newcastle team v Liverpool

Here’s hoping that team has got enough in it to beat Brighton tomorrow, or a tough tough season looks all but guaranteed.
