A game that Newcastle United were fully expected to lose and they did – but fans left wondering what might have happened if after Willems’ stunning opener, Newcastle hadn’t helped gift the two first half Liverpool comeback goals and/or if Krafth had scored when left unmarked in the box at 2-1 down after the break.
Newcastle’s most solid defender yet again, Paul Dummett (6.8) is the (NUFC) man of the match. Vital blocks and clearances, yet another wholehearted display.
Only one other player rated 6.0 or better, Jetro Willems (6.2) not that great defensively but that cracking goal no doubt adding a whole extra point to his rating.
At the other end of the scale, Emil Krafth (3.5) was once again poor and Newcastle’s weakest link, the wing-back looking no kind of improvement on Yedlin and Manquillo.
The other eight starters then evenly divided on the 5.0 mark and above, compared to below that level.
Fabian Schar (5.8) voted third highest on the day and made some vital challenges, exhausted after his efforts hopefully his late withdrawal through injury proves to be cramp and nothing more serious.
Isaac Hayden (5.6) got through plenty of work in midfield, whilst Martin Dubravka (5.4) was at fault for Liverpool’s second goal but then was excellent after the break, keeping the score down.
Jamaal Lascelles just scraped a 5.0, the least impressive of the three central defenders and lucky not to give a penalty away.
As for the rest, Joelinton (4.9) worked hard but with next to no support, whilst Christian Atsu laid the ball off for the goal and put in the cross when Krafth should have done better but offered little else throughout the game.
With the joint second lowest mark of 4.6, you had Miguel Almiron full of energy but finding dead ends when trying to carry the ball, a thankless task as he was repeatedly outnumbered and minimal help from teammates, whilst Jonjo Shelvey should have done better for the first Liverpool goal and struggled to have any impact whatsoever in the middle of the pitch.
