Newcastle United are back in the bottom three.

Steve Bruce and his team finding themselves in the relegation zone after the fifth round of premier League matches.

Defeat at Liverpool means Newcastle only have four points and one win from their opening five games, as well as the exit from the League Cup.

Other results at the weekend leaving the Magpies vulnerable to making that drop back down to the drop zone.

If Aston Villa got a point or better against West Ham on Monday night it meant Newcastle would drop down to eighteenth.

At the end of a fractious 90 minutes, Villa got a point from a goalless draw, though they will feel they could and should have got all three points.

West Ham also having to play the final 23 minutes with 10 men after Mauaku got sent off for two yellow card offences.

Villa rising to 17th and sending Newcastle into the relegation zone on goal difference.

How the Premier League table looks now (10pm Monday night):

Steve Bruce and his players now face what looks a seriously big game on Saturday, at home to Brighton.

You never like to say ‘must win game’ so early in the season but this one does look…a game that could dictate the mood for a fair few weeks.

After the Seagulls visit, Newcastle then have Leicester (Away), Man Utd (Home), Chelsea (A), Wolves (H), West Ham (A).

A run of games that takes us into November with 11 games played.
