Newcastle 0 Brighton 0  – Saturday 21 September 5.30pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle drawing with Brighton in Saturday’s late kick-off.

Jamie Swan:

“Pretty miserable performance for 70 minutes.

“Second best all over apart from the scoreline.

“Lack of urgency and quality meant what little we had of the ball was given up even quicker.

“Sorry, but Almiron is going to need to be rested to take the pressure off. Back in the day Clarky (of zero pace but having a football brain) was given the nickname ‘Jigsaw’, for supposedly going to pieces in the box – still bagged a good few. Not sure Miggy (of road runner pace and brain) could lace his boots. Our three subs made a good difference and we actually gave it a go, with Maximan looking decent and dangerous.

“Nice to see Carroll come on and please keep him fit to take pressure off Joelinton who if gets more than 8 goals this season, I’ll be very surprised.

“Games like this need to be won, nothing viewed today makes me think we are going to be anywhere but in the bottom 4 or 5.

“Happy weekend people.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“A really poor display for 65 minutes.

“Thankfully we survived, before the introduction of Saint-Maximum changed the game.

“Great to see such a reception for Carroll.

“It’s not a disaster but we need to get better at home and quickly.

“Ironically we probably were more deserving of the win in this fixture last season and lost. Onwards and upwards.”

Paul Patterson:

“Didn’t see the game as I was at work and continuing my boycott but I hope the 40k+ fans look at themselves and realise that they were watching one of the sides that will be relegated this season.

“And I’m not talking about Brighton.”

Ben Cooper:

“In a game where both teams went out to not lose, it was no surprise that no one did.

“Very few united players did themselves any favours and it was only when SM and Carroll came on that we looked like trying to score, never mind actually doing it.

“It was just all round dull.”

David Punton:

“What a waste of a Saturday night.”

Kieran Reynolds:

“So we come out of a must win game relieved to get a point after a dreadful performance.

“That was a bit like the Simpsons episode when Homer becomes a boxer.

“Brighton dominated but somehow they failed to win.

“We only started to look like we could win the game when Saint-Maximin and Carroll came on in the second half.

“Brighton paid for a poor performance in the final third and it will be interesting to see if this costs them over the season. We don’t play them again until May.

“How significant could that game be?”

Brian Standen:

“Second best for 80 minutes!

“Poor performance from Shelvey and quite frankly looks disinterested!

“For sure Saint Maximim is a good player as his 20 minutes produced more than Almiron whose confidence is clearly shot!

“Poor Joelinton, isolated and chasing shadows until Carroll came on!

“Disappointing result in a flat atmosphere!”

GToon;

“That was embarrassing.

“Outplayed from start to finish apart from a five minute spell towards the end.

“So who can we beat?

“Who can we even compete with?

“The point feels like the one given in the Generation Game out of sympathy for an appalling effort at decorating a cake.

“Anybody who didn’t watch the game might think a point is ok against fellow strugglers but that doesn’t tell the story of the gulf in ability and class between the two teams.”

Nat Seaton:

“Terrible game of football, the highlight of which was a great save off the line by Schar!

“A goalless draw at home to a poor Brighton side sums up just where we are at.

“I know for a lot of people it is harder to stay away than come to the games but after this performance not much is going on, on the pitch, to encourage anyone to come…”

Steve Hickey:

“Lots of effort but no end product.

“Wide open in the first half and wasteful in the second.

“A draw was probably a fair result but you ask yourself ‘who are we going to beat’.

“A long hard season ahead with all the hallmarks of relegation.

“Lots of empty spaces!”
