Joselu second La Liga start: Another man of the match award and scores – Couldn’t make it up
Joselu wasn’t the greatest of players but he was one of the good guys, always giving his all for Newcastle United when called upon.
When allocated a budget of only £5m to buy a striker for the Premier League in summer 2017 after promotion, Rafa Benitez had no choice but to shop for a bargain buy.
Buying Joselu for £5m from Stoke reserves, I would say Newcastle got their money’s worth.
When leaving five weeks ago, Joselu’s parting message to NUFC supporters was: ‘Dear Newcastle United Fans, the time has come to say goodbye. I just can say THANK YOU. Incredible Stadium, city, Club and people. Wish you all the best for the upcoming season.’
For Joselu, his competitive debut for Alaves was two weeks ago (Sunday 18 August) in La Liga.
The 29 year old ended up getting booked, scoring the only goal of the game (watch below) with a cracking header AND be named man of the match, Alaves beating Levante 1-0.
This weekend, it was his second La Liga start for Alaves, no booking but once again he scored and was man of the match, his goal earning a point at Getafe, Josleu scoring an equaliser in the 31st minute.
As you can see, the WhoScored ratings have him man of the match with a rating of 7.7, whilst watch (click ‘Watch on YouTube’ below after clicking play) his left footed goal after some impressive perseverance..
When Joselu left – Newcastle United official statement:
‘Joselu has completed a permanent move to La Liga side Deportivo Alavés.
The 29-year-old forward has joined the Spanish side for an undisclosed fee, bringing his two-year stay at St. James’ Park to an end.
Joselu signed for the Magpies from Stoke City in August 2017, and went on to score in his home league debut for the club – a 3-0 win over West Ham United later that month.
In total, the former Real Madrid forward – who had spells with Celta Vigo, Hoffenheim, Eintracht Frankfurt, Hannover and Deportivo La Coruña before arriving on Tyneside from the Potters – made 52 appearances for United, scoring seven times in all competitions.
The club wishes Joselu well for the future.’
