Jan van Halst says Newcastle United fans just have to accept Jetro Willems is suspect in defence
Jetro Willems allowed Newcastle fans to dream on Saturday.
His rocket of a shot with his weaker foot put Newcastle in a shock 1-0 lead.
However, reality then hit home as the home side go into gear and eventually ran out comfortable 3-1 winners.
Former Ajax star and now TV pundit, Jan van Halst, has been commenting on Jetro Willems, who has a year at St James Park on loan with an option to buy for Newcastle.
Jan van Halst was delighted for Willems but warned that the loan player will never be that reliable at the back.
Jan van Halst commenting on Ziggo Sport (via Voetbalzone):
“He (Jetro Willems) makes it difficult for a football analyst.
“Before the game we say that he should play a little more carefully as a left back. It is of course the charm of Willems (that he ts stronger going forward).
“If he does this (scores a goal like he did at Anfield) for PSV in a home match (in Holland) you say ‘This is not possible in the Premier League’… but that’s foolish, he just does it. A great goal.
“It makes you crazy as a football analyst as of course you have to use him (going forward) with his speed but defensively he has his vulnerabilities.
“You have to take this for granted a bit.
“This is that playfulness of Jetro Willems.
“He will never get rid of it (defensive vulnerability) completely because he is already 25.”
The comments from Jan van Halst pretty much sum up what I have seen so far, Jetro Willems does look decent at times going forward, not just with that goal, but looks pretty poor in defence.
Against Liverpool they got in behind Willems and he has looked suspect in other games, Matt Ritchie clearly giving Newcastle far more defensively in that left wing-back position than the Dutchman.
An interesting dilemma for Steve Bruce as he has said Ritchie is set to return from injury far quicker than expected.
