Jamie Redknapp says only a blip and Newcastle United shouldn’t have made Liverpool angry

Former Liverpool midfielder Jamie Redknapp thinks it was just ‘a blip’ when Newcastle took the lead through that Willems stunner on Saturday.

The player turned pundit stating ‘That only made the hosts more angry and they duly went on to wipe the floor with the visitors.’

It is easy to make out afterwards, once the scoreline is decided, that the result was inevitable. However, Liverpool started the game very flat and indeed I don’t think Martin Dubravka made a save in the first 45 minutes.

It was actually defensive errors by Newcastle that helped gift a half-time lead to Liverpool, Krafth and Shelvey weak on the first goal and then Atsu and Dubravka at fault for the second.

If Newcastle go in 1-0 up at half-time then who knows…

It is now two and a half years since Liverpool lost at home, a massive 43 games ago now, when you add in the fact that Newcastle had only won two league games at Anfield since 1950, then the odds were always ‘slightly’ stacked against Newcastle.

Jamie Redknapp claims that Steve Bruce ‘will have left Anfield thinking a 3-1 defeat isn’t the worst result’…whatever the truth of that, some Newcastle fans weren’t happy to see Bruce seemingly accept defeat when going 3-1 down with 20 minute remaining, no real effort made to get back into the game.

The Newcastle Head Coach has repeatedly claimed his Newcastle teams would try to attack and get on the front foot but no sign of that so far.

Indeed, interesting to look at what other clubs have done recently (as well as getting beat) at Anfield.

Newcastle only had 24% possession and one shot on target on Saturday.

The previous six Premier League matches at Anfield also saw Liverpool win but the visitors all proved more of a threat than Newcastle did:

Arsenal – 48% possession and three shots on target

Norwich – 42% possession and five shots on target

Wolves  – 41% possession and two shots on target

Huddersfield – 30% possession and one shot on target

Chelsea – 38% possession and three shots on target

Spurs – 51% possession and two shots on target

Burnley – 31% possession and two shots on target

Newcastle’s season won’t be decided by what happens when playing the likes of Liverpool but so far there has been a desperate lack of creativity, goal threat and control of games when playing the likes of Norwich, Watford and a much weakened Arsenal team at home. Apart from a 10-15 minute spell in the second-half of that Watford match, Newcastle have looked very poor going forward.

Brighton at home is a massive game.

Jamie Redknapp speaking to The Mail:

“It helps to have a fortress like Anfield.

“The last time Liverpool lost at home was to Crystal Palace in April 2017 — 43 games ago. That is the longest active streak in Europe’s elite leagues, with Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain closest on 22.

“It is also the second-longest streak the Premier League has seen, beaten only by Chelsea’s run of 86 games at Stamford Bridge from 2004 to 2008.

“Can they trouble that record? I don’t see Liverpool’s run ending any time soon.

“Newcastle took the lead on Saturday but that was a blip.

“That only made the hosts more angry and they duly went on to wipe the floor with the visitors.

“In the Eighties, away teams at Anfield would seem to know their fate before a ball is even kicked. They’d know they would struggle to get a sniff. If you won a corner in front of the Kop, you might as well have done a lap of honour.

“I sense that aura is on its way back. It feels like Liverpool are in the thick of a golden era again.

“No disrespect to Newcastle, but Steve Bruce will have left Anfield thinking a 3-1 defeat isn’t the worst result.

“Other sides will go to that stadium this season hoping they can simply avoid a mauling, too.”
