Has Mark Lawrenson broke a remarkable 123 match run with Liverpool v Newcastle prediction

Mark Lawrenson has been assessing Newcastle United’s chances against Liverpool.

The BBC Sport pundit two weeks ago predicted a win for Newcastle over Watford and had a message for the fans:

‘It was a great win for Newcastle at Tottenham and what I would say to Newcastle fans, is just support the team. Steve Bruce got a great result at Spurs, get behind him. I have really liked what I have seen of Joelinton and Miguel Almiron. If they get the service they look like they can score goals.’

Well his prediction didn’t go too well in that game but on international duty Almiron has scored for the first time in 10 months, so hopefully this will flow into his Newcastle form in front of goal.

As for Steve Bruce, the fans aren’t really for or against him, simply somebody who they see as the latest in a growing line, only interrupted by Rafa Benitez, who didn’t have a CV to land the job, with no other Premier League even considering him, if they had been looking for a new manager/head coach this summer.

Nevertheless, the full away end was sold out for Saturday a while ago and if there is anything on the pitch to support, they will be doing so.

Mark Lawrenson predicts a circling of the wagons by Steve Bruce, the same as at Spurs where Newcastle only had 20% possession. However, he goes for a 3-0 home win as he says the scousers have far more attacking threats than Tottenham had.

Difficult to argue as Liverpool have won their last 13 PL games scoring 34 goals, scoring at least two goals in each of those 13 games.

Mark Lawrenson is a very real and obvious joke with his Liverpool predictions, so no matter who they had been playing, he wouldn’t have had defeat as a possible option.

This is his prediction record in recent years for Liverpool games:

2019/20: W3 D1 L0

2018/19: W27 D11 L0

2017/18: W23 D15 L0

2016/17: W27 D11 L0

It was actually the sixth last game of the 2015/16 Premier League season when Mark Lawrenson last forecast a PL defeat for Liverpool.

Rafa Benitez had only been in the Newcastle job a month and Liverpool were actually home to Everton. Liverpool had lost nine PL games already that season but whilst Lawrenson forecast them to lose to Everton, Liverpool actually won 4-0. The following game Mark Lawrenson actually forecast only a draw for Liverpool at home to Newcastle in April 2016 and he got it right, Rafa’s side coming back from 2-0 down to draw 2-2.

Mark Larwenson’s prediction for Saturday is 124 games in a row where he hasn’t forecast a defeat for Liverpool. The only thing that is just as remarkable is that he has kept his job despite this total lack of professionalism.

Imagine the stick Alan Shearer would get if he always predicted Newcastle wouldn’t lose…even from NUFC fans!

Mark Lawrenson talking to BBC Sport:

“Newcastle’s best performance of the season came in their win at Tottenham before the international break, when they circled the wagons.

“I am sure Magpies boss Steve Bruce is going to set up his side the same way, camped in their own half to try to stifle Liverpool, but I don’t see it working this time.

“The Reds are playing extremely well and they have got more ways of scoring than most other teams that Newcastle will face.

“Jurgen Klopp’s side will find a way through.

“Prediction is Liverpool 3 Newcastle 0.”
