Former top referee rules on Newcastle v Watford controversial incident

Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his call on this Newcastle v Watford match incident.

Last week. Dermot Gallagher looked at the VAR review of Harry Kane’s latest dive.

The former top ref saying that Mike Dean (the referee on the pitch at Tottenham) and the VAR review, had both called it correctly in denying the cheating Harry Kane a penalty (he was up to it yet again against Arsenal yesterday but still no card!).

Newcastle’s first Premier League brush with VAR was a positive one, so what about this time?

The incident Dermot Gallagher has looked at, is when Isaac Hayden challenged and knocked the ball down for Fabian Schar to score on Saturday, should it have been disallowed due to the ball touching Hayden’s hand?

Gallagher says that the referee got it wrong and that VAR should have picked it up and disallowed the goal.

So last week VAR helped to confirm Harry Kane’s cheating and on this occasion VAR missed this new very strict interpretation of ‘handball’ in the box.

With our luck you just know that we will shortly have a run of bad news on the VAR front…

Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:

“The ball appears to hit Isaac Hayden’s hand moments before Fabian Schar scores to equalise for Newcastle, which goes unnoticed by the referee or VAR.”

Dermot Gallagher verdict:

“Wrong call.”

Dermot Gallagher says:

“It didn’t get picked up.

“Whether that’s because they were trying to keep the game flowing and do it as quickly as possible, I don’t know.

“But what it will do, it’s all about reflection and going forward it’ll be – is it offside, is there a foul, is there a handball – go through the checklist, and if it takes another 10 or 15 seconds then so be it.”
