Former top referee rules on Leicester v Newcastle United controversial incidents
Dermot Gallagher reviews controversial decisions in the Premier League after each round of games, on behalf of Sky Sports, and has given his call on these two Leicester v Newcastle United match incidents.
The easiest one to settle is the incident that happened in the second-half.
Dermot Gallagher looking into whether Jamie Vardy should have been flagged/blown up for offside when scoring the second goal just after the break.
The former top ref saying it was the correct decision and praises the match officials because it was such a close call.
The more controversial one though is Isaac Hayden’s red card on 43 minute, for his challenge on Praet.
Dermot Gallagher though says he has no doubt.
Stating that Hayden ‘ticks all the boxes’ for a red card, as the challenge had ‘Speed, intensity and point of contact, it’s dangerous.’
Gallagher believing that ‘there is no defence’ for what the midfielder did and he deserved to go.
Dermot Gallagher speaking to Sky Sports:
Incident:
“Isaac Hayden’s challenge on Dennis Praet.”
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“Speed, intensity and point of contact, it’s dangerous – it ticks all the boxes.
“The referee has no option whatsoever. I think when you see it he brings his foot up and puts his studs in just below his knee.
“When you see that, there is nothing else the referee can do. It ticks all the boxes for a red card.
“There is very little wiggle room for anything other than a red card. Once you bring your studs up like that, there is no defence.”
Incident:
“Is Jamie Vardy onside for the second goal?”
Dermot Gallagher verdict:
“He was, just.
“It was a good call.
“Over the weekend we have seen some tight calls and the referees have done well.”
