Charlie Nicholas predicts Leicester v Newcastle as star man spotted in training
Charlie Nicholas has been looking ahead to Sunday at the King Power Stadium.
Third top playing fourth bottom.
The current reality is that Leicester are a club that are run in a way that Newcastle fans believe their should operate.
Rather than just survival, always looking to press on and try to challenge.
Charlie Nicholas only sees one result in this game and it isn’t positive for Newcastle.
Nicholas spends most of his time talking about James Maddison and he is a very exciting player, a disgrace that he hasn’t got on the pitch for England yet. Something that would have been guaranteed if he had been playing for Tottenham, as a prime example.
Coincidentally, Maddison was excellent against Spurs last Saturday and scored a superb winning goal.
Newcastle hopes were raised when he picked up an ankle injury in that win but Thursday brought confirmation the attacking midfielder had returned to training, suggesting there is ever chance he will be available on Sunday.
As for Newcastle United, the only mention the Sky Sports pundit gives is that they ‘dug in and were dogged in their draw against Brighton’…
That is what we are reduced to under Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce, ‘dogged’ all out defence and only 29% possession at home to Brighton!
The thing is as well, is that anybody who watched the game will know that it was only due to Brighton’s lack of confidence/quality in front of goal that they didn’t win, they have now scored only two goals in five Premier League games, emphasising that their very good approach play is being let down by finishing.
As for Newcastle, Steve Bruce says his team have been far too attacking and he needs to rein that in, to tighten things up at the back.
Difficult/impossible to imagine how Bruce can make this team less attacking/more defensive but as Charlie Nicholas says, Leicester will surely find a way through regardless.
Newcastle’s best/only option for a result appears to rest on being MORE attacking and hoping we see a front three of Joelinton, Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin that can produce chances and goals.
How that would/could fit in with Steve Bruce going even more defensive remains to be seen but certainly Newcastle’s biggest problem has been minimal goal threat up to now.
Charlie Nicholas speaking to Sky Sports:
“Leicester are going well.
“James Maddison has grown in stature to be Leicester’s go-to man.
“He was always brought off with the previous manager but Brendan Rodgers has embraced him.
“I was saying on Soccer Saturday last week that he has to make more of his gifts and what does he go and do? He scores the winner and has an influential game against Tottenham!
“He did some eye-catching things at Old Trafford but it was only done in small pockets. His potential is still growing, though.
“Maddison is an injury doubt for this one but I can only see a Leicester win regardless.
“Newcastle dug in and were dogged in their draw against Brighton last week but Leicester will pass, probe and eventually score.
“Jamie Vardy needs the ball into gaps earlier if they are to break down a back three or five, and I think they will do that.
“Prediction is Leicester 2 Newcastle 0.”
