Brilliant Fabian Schar goal almost wins it for Switzerland with second goal in four days

On Saturday, Fabian Schar gambled and surged from his defensive position and into the box, scoring a valuable equaliser for a goal shy Newcastle United.

Wednesday night the central defender has repeated the trick but this time for his country.

An excellent passing move saw Fabian Schar involved and as he made the pass he sprinted towards the penalty area and arrived at the perfect moment to sweetly strike the lay-off into the bottom right corner.

The goal making it 1-0 to Switzerland in a key European Championships qualifier against the Republic of Ireland.

However, that 74th minute goal proved not enough, as in the 85th minute a header equaliser from David McGoldrick was enough to earn a point for the home team.

Former Newcastle defender Kevin Mbabu also played, picking up a yellow card late on, as did Fabian Schar.

The goal was the eighth for Fabian Schar in the senior Switzerland team.

Just under three years since he scored in a 2-1 win over Andorra in October 2016.

Disappointing for Switzerland that they conceded that late equaliser but good news for Newcastle fans that Fabian Schar has started the season in great form AND scoring goals.
