Brighton boss gutted to not take all three ‘deserved’ points after dominating Newcastle United
Graham Potter was left bemused after his Brighton side somehow failed to come away with three points from St James Park.
An enterprising away side dominated a very negative Steve Bruce Newcastle team, who spent most of the match defending so deep.
With 71% possession away from home, a little bit more belief when they got so regularly into good positions would have seen the Seagulls coast to a comfortable victory.
Newcastle somehow survived and were indebted to Fabian Schar who made a spectacular clearance off the line.
Summing up his day, Graham Potter said ‘You are always disappointed when you don’t feel you get the rewards.’
The Brighton boss happy with some things but not the final scoreline: ‘I’m delighted with the performance and felt we deserved three points.’
Very worrying for Newcastle fans as in three games against fellow relegation candidates Norwich, Watford and Brighton, Steve Bruce has looked clueless as to how to produce both wins or convincing football.
“I’m a bit frustrated.
“I thought our performance was really good and we did a lot of what we wanted to do.
“We had one cleared off the line and got into their box often.
“You are always disappointed when you don’t feel you get the rewards.
“But it’s a point away from home and a difficult place to come.
“We are at the start of a process we keep moving forward.
“I’m delighted with the performance and felt we deserved three points.
“We need to maintain that and try and improve. We’ve been playing quite well.
“We’re disappointed with the points tally and disappointed with the result today.
“The players have got a resilience, character and organisation to defend the box when they need to. We’re lucky that we’ve got that foundation.
“You (also) need to be able to run in behind, you need to be able to play.
“You need to be able to defend the box, you need to be able to attack in the wide areas, that’s what all the top teams test you in those areas and we are trying to do that.
“Some bits we did well and some bits we can improve as well of course.”
