Alan Shearer says it is ‘scandalous’ the type of people allowed to control football clubs

Alan Shearer has questioned the fit and proper persons test on who is allowed to own a football club in England.

The Newcastle United and England legend sums the situation up perfectly, describing it as ‘scandalous’ what is being allowed to take place.

Many people have repeatedly called for government intervention when it comes to how football is ran in this country.

Talking especially about the situation at Bury, with fans crying outside the ground, staff losing jobs, Alan Shearer declares: ‘You have to ask the question, how on earth are so many people allowed to go and buy these football clubs, how can they get through these fit and proper (person) tests?’

Shearer says ‘It can’t be right’ what is being allowed to go on but Bury is only the tip of the iceberg.

So many clubs being used and abused by owners.

From the likes of Bury, Bolton and Blackpool, right up to Newcastle United.

They aren’t just businesses, they are community assets and need to be protected as such by government, with safeguards in place to stop unscrupulous people simply using clubs for their own benefit.

Here’s hoping though in the shorter term that somehow Bury can be saved.

Alan Shearer talking to Coral:

“Looking at the pictures of the (Bury) fans when they are stood outside the ground, shedding tears, you have to feel for them.

“A club with so much history and been around for so so long, for it all to end like that, just so sad.

“Not only for players and fans but also the staff, who are losing their jobs at that football club.

“An incredibly sad situation, one that shouldn’t be allowed to happen.

“One that is happening far too often and will continue to happen.

“It is one that has to be looked into because people can’t be allowed to get into football clubs so easily and then for these type of thingsĀ  to happen.

“It’s just not right.

“You have to ask the question, how on earth are so many people allowed to go and buy these football clubs, how can they get through these fit and proper (person) tests?

“It can’t be right and it is something that has to be looked into.

“It is scandalous that people are allowed to get into football clubs and allow these things to happen.”
