Achraf Lazaar comments after he and Emmanuel Riviere make debuts for Serie B club
Last weekend Achraf Lazaar played his first football for Cosenza FC.
Joining the Serie B club on loan on Italian deadline day (see below) two weeks ago, the left sided defender is with Cosenza on loan for the season, still having two years left on his Newcastle deal.
Nine days ago Achraf Lazaar appeared for Cosenza in a 2-1 friendly defeat away at Serie A Lecce.
After that friendly defeat, Lazaar said ‘I’m happy to wear this shirt and be back in Italy.’
Yesterday, Cosenza were home to Pescara in Serie B, having started the season with a draw and a defeat before the Newcastle player’s arrival.
Achraf Lazaar started the game and managed 45 minutes before being replaced, seemingly due to a lack of full match fitness having played so little football in recent times.
Playing at left-back in a back four, Lazaar exited with his team losing 1-0 at the break.
In the 70th minute Cosenza equalised, with then former Newcastle striker (eight league goals in the past five years) Emmanuel Riviere coming on as a sub in the 77th minute. Riviere having recently arrived as a free agent after Metz released him.
That substitution not having the desired effect as it was Pescara who scored a late winner in the 88th minute.
Reflecting on his debut, Achraf Lazaar had this to say, his team fourth bottom with one point from a possible nine:
“I’m happy and proud to have debuted with the shirt #rossoblu at home.
“There is a lot of work to do but I am convinced that together we can achieve any result.”
‘The Cosenza Football Club announces that it has reached an agreement with the Newcastle United Football Club for the acquisition of the right to the sports performances of Achraf Lazaar.
