A nightmare Friday for Martin Dubravka

Martin Dubravka has had a Friday night he will want to forget.

The Newcastle keeper and his Slovakian teammates went into Friday night’s match second in European Championships qualification Group E.

At home to Croatia, a win would have put them three points clear of the visitors at the halfway stage of the group and level with Hungary on points at the top, after four games.

However, after a goalless first 45 minutes, things all began to go wrong for Martin Dubravka and his team.

A low shot to the bottom corner gave the keeper no chance in first half added time.

Then only seconds after the break, a cruel deflection left Dubravka no chance.

A brilliant solo run by Petkovic left him one on one and whilst the Slovakian number one got a hand to it he couldn’t prevent 3-0.

Then with a minute to go it was 4-0, the only goal he was at fault for, as an average header somehow got past him.

Only once has Martin Dubravka ever conceded more than three goals for his country and that was an unofficial friendly back in January 2017, Slovakia losing 6-0 in front of only 100 spectators.

Whilst at Newcastle United, the goalkeeper has only once conceded four and that was the 4-0 at Anfield last Boxing Day.

Monday is now a crucial game with four teams separated by only three points (Hungary and Croatia on 9 points, Wales and Slovakia on 6), Martin Dubravka and Slovakia visiting group leaders Hungary.
