West Brom back in for Dwight Gayle – The Telegraph

Dwight Gayle is once again being targeted by West Brom according to media reports on Monday.

The Telegraph are reporting that the Baggies are now ‘pushing hard’ to take the striker back to the Hawthorns after a loan season where he was player of the year, plus top scorer with 24 goals in 34 Champions starts (and six sub appearances).

A goal machine in the second tier, Dwight Gayle has now scored 47 goals in his last 60 Championship starts (plus 12 sub appearances).

Earlier in the summer West Brom stated that they wouldn’t be coming back in for Dwight Gayle as they can’t afford to pay Premier League wages in the second tier. However, this window has seen them raise almost £30m through sales and spend less than half that on incoming players, whilst the wage bill has been seriously reduced with many high earners such as the likes of Rodriguez and Barry moving on.

The report also names Stoke City and Leeds looking to sign the Newcastle striker, Stoke boss Nathan Jones last week said (see below) Gayle would be a real ‘marquee signing’ for a second tier club and spoke of his admiration for the striker.

The Telegraph say they understand Dwight Gayle wasn’t happy that his number nine shirt was given to Joelinton and isn’t optimistic about how many first team starts he will get now.

I can believe both of those things but less believable is the idea that Newcastle would let Gayle go out on loan again, as The Telegraph indicate would be West Brom’s approach.

They state that Slaven Bilic is ‘exploring the possibility of signing him on loan again with an option to buy’ but that would mean Newcastle having no guarantee of any sale in a year’s time, as no chance of West Brom buying if they didn’t get promoted.

Dwight Gayle turns 29 in October and whilst Steve Bruce has said he wants the striker to stay, we know that is meaningless if Mike Ashley decides otherwise. I can’t see any way that Ashley would let Gayle go out on loan but neither do I see him being happy about having somebody on the bench who would be a depreciating asset and one of the highest wage earners.

West Brom started with a win at Notts Forest on Saturday but desperately need to add more goals and the report states that a striker is Bilic’s top priority by 5pm Thursday.

We wait to see if any more players will come into St James Park but it looks guaranteed some will leave, at the minute Newcastle have 26 senior outfield players and only 22 places in the Premier League squad they need to name after the window closes.

The Mag – 30 July 2019:

Will Dwight Gayle be moving on from Newcastle United?

Despite a serious lack of goals in the current Newcastle squad, the messages appearing in the media appear to indicate that the club want to move him on.

Set to turn 29 in October, many Newcastle fans believing that Mike Ashley sees it as the time when a best price can be achieved, as if left any later his transfer value will almost certainly fall.

Dwight Gayle is still to totally convince in the Premier League as a regular goalscorer but is an absolute machine in the Championship.

Player of the year for West Brom, the loan striker scored 24 goals in 34 Championship starts (6 sub appearances), which when added to his NUFC record. means 47 goal in his last 60 Championship starts (plus 12 sub appearances.

Newcastle United report that Dwight Gayle is out with a calf injury at the moment but that hasn’t stopped the rumours, with Stoke heavily linked.

A disastrous season after relegation saw them flirting with another one rather than instant promotion.

Ending up 16th, Stoke managed only 45 goals, only the bottom two clubs scored less. Despite that, the only striker added so far is 30 year old free transfer Lee Gregory from Millwall.

Backed by the Bet365 wealth of the Stoke owners, Dwight Gayle would/should be within their reach.

Stoke boss Nathan Jones has now responded to the rumours and despite trying to deflect attention away, it appears clear that they have been looking at the NUFC striker as a potential signing.

Following rumours of Stoke City set to bid for Dwight Gayle, Nathan asked what he can say about the possible signing BBC Stoke:

“Only that he is a fantastic footballer and he is a Newcastle United player (at the moment).

“We have some good strikers at the club.

“Dwight Gayle is a fantastic one and he is a real marquee signing at this level.

“That is all I can say on it really..

“He is a Newcastle player.

“He is someone we like because he is a very talented individual and when he plays at this level he usually scores goals…but anything else would be wrong of me to mention.”

“I think we have good variation in terms of the ones we have got. Yes, they have to hit the ground running and they have to score goals. But we have good variation. If there is scope and opportunity to add real quality then I know I will be backed to do that.

“It is just getting the right one. Not just player, but character, athlete, and then we have to consider the squad so there are lots of things to consider.

“But we are not playing fantasy football where we just try to sign as many good players as we can. We have to think of the balance of the squad. We have to think of the budget and everything that we have to think of being the manager of a football club.

“But we are always after good players. We are always after improving the squad and, if there is scope to do something like that then look, John and Peter (Chairman and Vice-Chairman) have never said no to me.”
