Sunderland fans call for manager to be sacked before Newcastle kick off Premier League – I was distracted

Things have been ‘interesting’ this summer on Tyneside, so much so that I hadn’t really paid any attention to what Sunderland fans were facing this season.

The big things I had picked up were that the mackems thought it was very funny that Rafa Benitez had left and then found it even more hilarious, when Steve Bruce was appointed by Mike Ashley.

I remembered reading early on this summer that Sunderland owner Stewart Donald was desperately trying to sell his controlling interest in the club. However, I guessed that this hadn’t happened or else it would have made some kind of headlines.

With the lower leagues kicking off this weekend, I took a look at how the reality was looking for Sunderland fans this time…

Well last season they drew a massive 20 games and on Saturday they have started as they mean to go on.

At home yesterday they went behind to Oxford before equalising with a penalty in the second half, apparently their only serious effort on goal.

Reading BBC Sport, it turns out there has been some major changes playing-wise, if not quality…, as Tom Flanagan was the only outfield playing starting against Oxford, who also started their losing play-off final to Charlton less than three months ago.

Looking further, Sunderland have bought nobody and only managed a few frees/loans, whilst they have had to let a whole host of players leave to cut the wage bill and sold their captain George Honeyman for £400,000 to Hull.

After watching yesterday’s dismal performance and the manager’s usual negative clueless tactics, many Sunderland fans are wanting Jack Ross sacked even before Newcastle have kicked off their season.

We have all kinds of concerns as Newcastle fans but I have a feeling that Sunderland are going to prove a welcome distraction if we need one, looking set to follow the worst ever season in their history (fifth in the third tier) with something even better (as far as Newcastle supporters are concerned).

Sunderland fans comments via Ready To Go message board:

‘What are we waiting for ?

Sack Jack Ross.

He should have been sacked after the charlton game but the happy clappers wouldn’t have it.’

‘100% this.’

‘Agreed hasn’t learned anything from last season, today’s game was just a replay from last season.’

‘Worse if anything, absolutely dire.’

‘Comes down to money, Donald doesn’t want to spend any.’

‘You have to think his strategy was to try and get us up with the bones of what we had, get shot of some high earners then turn around the club for a quick profit.

It’s all gone to t.ts and he doesn’t have the financial wherewithal to reverse the slide.

It’s the football equivalent of buying the worst house in the best street, giving it a lick of paint for a tenner and hoping a buyer will bite, all while the boiler is fu..ed, it needs a rewire, and there’s a hole in a roof.’

‘Where’s all the positivity from this morning man.’

‘Got to agree. He’s an awful manager.’

‘Was a typical first game of the season game. Seen a few things I was happy with, think we have a good looking squad and firmly expect us to win the league to be honest.’

‘Will we fu.. man.’

‘It wasn’t though. It was typical of the last 20 odd games we’ve played in all competitions where we’ve looked abject as fu.. with a manager who hasn’t got a clue.’

‘Looked the same old sh..e as much of last season to me.’

‘1 shot on target from open play in 90 minutes at home to Oxford, its was dreadful to be honest no creativity at all in the final 3rd of the pitch and still didnt look like scoring.’

‘I have been hoping and hoping that we could get stability on the management side and build.

But if you don’t even have the nuance to see that you have to change the way we play from last season, then I’m sorry it’s time to move on and get someone in that can.’

‘Just sack the fu..er.’

‘Jack Ross hasn’t learned or addressed a single thing from last year. Oxford should have been 2 up in 20 minutes and their off field problems are well documented.

Turgid slow ineffective football is becoming his trademark, the opposite of what he was touted as. Basically Moyes lite, except in this league he has more resources than most so it’s even worse.’

‘No idea how people think we are going to get an automatic place. The team is weaker than last season ffs.’

‘I would have sacked him at half time which I’m sure would have been a first but it’s not the result that was doing my head in it was the players clearly not knowing what their job was.’

‘He is absolutely clueless.’

‘I’ve always been one of his supporters but that was absolutely awful today, clueless.’

‘He is a fu..ing charlatan and this proves that SD knows fu.. all, no chance will we get promoted under Dross,’

‘A very uninspiring man playing very uninspiring football. Will be gone sooner rather than later.’

‘Some people are utterly deluded like. Finding positives in that.’
