Steve Bruce pre-Leicester press conference – Reveals 10 Newcastle players set to be unavailable
Steve Bruce has taken his pre-Tottenham press conference.
The NUFC head coach meeting journalists early Tuesday morning before training.
An interesting game and an especially interesting team selection. With both Steve Bruce and Mike Ashley having already stated that Newcastle are going all out in the cup competitions.
‘All out’ maybe not the best choice of words considering the appalling cup record under Mike Ashley…
As it happens though, injuries/knocks are set to impact on the team, with Steve Bruce saying a number of players are likely to miss.
However, no doubt Newcastle fans will be keen to see just how many of those who miss, end up starting against Watford in the Premier League on Saturday.
Lascelles has the calf issue picked up on Sunday and despite Steve Bruce having previously said it isn’t a major concern, the same with Joelinton who had treatment on the pitch for what looked like a groin problem, the two of them look pretty sure to be missing on Wednesday night.
As well as that pair, you have long-term injured Lejeune, Carroll, Yedlin and Gayle who won’t be involved either.
Whilst this morning, Steve Bruce has indicated that Schar, Atsu and Almiron are all doubts as well.
When you add Allan Saint-Maximin with his hamstring, that makes 10 Newcastle players in total who look set not to be involved.
Despite this and fans fears about the lack of quality in depth anyway, Steve Bruce insists Newcastle have the squad to compete for the cups and do ok in the Premier League.
Steve Bruce pre-Leicester press conference:
“It is an amazing game.
“A week ago we simply didn’t play well enough (at Norwich), but at Spurs to a man they were terrific. They’ve set the standard.
“The most important thing was the response of the team – they’re the most important people.
“(Leicester) are a very good side when you look at the strength in depth they’ve got.
“They have recruited very well over the years.
“If Hull are capable of getting to a Cup Final as well as maintaining Premier League status (Hull lucky to do so as they only stayed up with 37 points then lost to Arsenal in the FA Cup final in 2013/14), then surely a club like this can.
“We have got a squad of 25 (senior) players which we named and we have got a squad capable and big enough to make changes (for Leicester).
“We still have experienced players (to come in) so we hope to give the cup a good go.”
Steve Bruce talking to BBC Newcastle:
“We’ve a few injuries.
“The main one is Saint-Maximin.
“We’re disappointed because he DID train all week – we didn’t just throw him in (at Spurs); we thought there was no risk… he looked sharp in training and that’s why we picked him.
“Atsu came on and did an unbelievable job considering how long he’s been out – what a performance he put in.
“He is chronically fatigued and we’ll have to see how his is.
“Then we’ve got Lascelles and Schär (with knocks), Almiron has got a sore ankle and, of course, Joelinton is still a little bit ginger with his groin.
“We’ll see how they all are again later this morning.”
