Steve Bruce injury update on three players following win at Spurs
Steve Bruce was a relieved man after watching his team pick up their first points of the season.
A great finish by Joelinton and a real backs to the wall defensive performance, producing a win for United.
However, the victory looked to have come at a price for Newcastle as three players were subbed having received treatment on the pitch.
Steve Bruce has given an update on the three players who were replaced.
Allan Saint-Maximin wasn’t able to train until Friday and the Head Coach has confirmed the ‘nightmare’ that it is his hamstring once again.
The winger had missed Norwich because of the issue and it was a surprise when ASM was named in the team after only just returning to training. That selection looking reckless and very Pardew-like (always willing to quickly risk players after injury) when the 22 year old pulled up after only 17 minutes.
It remains to be seen just how costly that decision proves to be as the player will surely miss at least a number of games, although the upcoming two week international break will help dilute that.
Steve Bruce confirms that it was a calf problem that forced a back to his best Jamaal Lascelles off the pitch.
However, he says he is ‘not too worried about’ this one, indicating though that the captain may not be involved against Leicester in midweek.
The same with Joelinton.
The striker went down in the second half and appeared to have treatment on his groin but Bruce grouped the centre-forward with Lascelles, in terms of hopefully no real issue but possibly/probably missing Leicester only three days after this Spurs win. The Brazilian was able to carry on unlike the other two and was only subbed in the final minutes.
If the pair do miss the League Cup game, we’ll never know if they would have otherwise have been included without picking up the injuries/knocks. As all eyes are on the starting eleven on Wednesday, with Newcastle fans wondering just how strong a team is put out in this cup match.
“Saint-Maximin’s is a recurrence of a hamstring and that is a nightmare for us unfortunately.
“The other ones we are not too worried about.
“Although whether they are going to be ready for Wednesday (home to Leicester in the League Cup) is another big call.
“Certainly, Saint-Maximin is the most difficult one, because he’s had a recurrence of a hamstring, which is a shame for him.
“Big Joe(linton) has run himself to a standstill I think.
“Jamaal has got a calf (injury)Steve but we don’t think it’s too serious.”
