Phil Neville has a go at Newcastle United fans and then defeats his own argument
I have long thought that Phil Neville isn’t one of the brightest.
His comments as a pundit often laughable but rarely/never funny in terms of laughing along with him, rather than laughing at him.
It summed it up when after a handful of games last season, he declared that Wolves were easily the best team in Premier League history, in the season after getting promotion, a distance better even than Kevin Keegan’s 1993/94 team that got 77 points and finished third.
Wolves eventually ending last season four places lower than Keegan’s 93/94 team and 20 points less (though in 1993/94 you played four more games).
After the opening Premier League fixtures at the weekend, Phil Neville was on MOTD 2 as a pundit.
He had a go at both Rafa Benitez and the Newcastle fans.
Accusing NUFC supporters of unrealistic expectations, that old chestnut, whilst Rafa was supposedly ‘very clever’ in playing the Newcastle fans, by leaving at the end of his contract.
So honouring your contract and then not being willing to be made a fool of once again by Mike Ashley, is tricking the fans???
As for unrealistic expectations of the fans, Phil Neville later defeats his own argument by claiming avoiding relegation will equal success for Newcastle United and their fans this season.
This is Newcastle United who have the 19th highest revenues in the world, always in the top eight Premier League revenues (apart from when Mike Ashley relegates us) and on TV more than any other club outside the top six.
I’m sure being a former teammate of Steve Bruce also plays no part…
Plus I always get the feeling that former Man U and Liverpool players who are now pundits, often/usually find that allegiance getting in the way of their punditry, so little wonder he goes against Rafa and is pro-Steve Bruce.
Phil Neville speaking on MOTD 2:
“It is a better squad (at Newcastle now).
“I never thought Rafa Benitez was going to stay.
“I thought that he was very clever in the way that he let his contract run out.
“He played a really good game with the fans.
“The thing for me, is that I don’t think these fans will ever be happy until Mike Ashley leaves this club…and you know what.
“Mike Ashley is not going to just give this club away.
“He is a really good, successful businessman.
“He has spent some money this summer and I definitely think that they have the right man to keep Newcastle in the league.
“Like last year with Rafa, keeping Newcastle in the Premier League should still be the aim at this moment in time, then they start building the blocks slowly.
“They will only stay in the Premier League if everybody is pulling in the same direction, like they were under Rafa.
“They have got to do the same for Steve Bruce.”
