Paul Merson says Newcastle fans lucky to have Mike Ashley as Jeff Stelling puts him right – Compelling

Compelling stuff on Saturday as Paul Merson goes off on one about Newcastle United, the fans and Mike Ashley, with Jeff Stelling attempting to put him right as to his stupidity.

It has to be said that Paul Merson didn’t look in the best of states and when you read what he had to say below, he is contradicting himself repeatedly.

It is almost like somebody who has had a few too many arguing with themselves.

Paul Merson says that at some point the Newcastle fans have to accept that Mike Ashley is doing his best but ‘No one else has put their money into the club. Only Mike Ashley has put his money in’, the supporters needing to just get on with it.

Merson actually coming out with the classic that the fans are ‘lucky’ to have Ashley or else where would the club and fans be?

Jeff Stelling pointing out the obvious, that if Mike Ashley wasn’t running Newcastle, then somebody else would be.

In the last Deloitte report, it showed only 18 more clubs in the world had more money coming in than Newcastle and this was despite no European football, getting nowhere in domestic cups, on live TV more than anybody outside the top six (and often more than some of them), Sports Direct paying an average of only £86,333 per season these past 12 years for their massive worldwide promotion via NUFC.

Paul Merson replying with ‘Why aint they’ (somebody else running NUFC) and Jeff Stelling replying with because Mike Ashley won’t sell the club.

Then in one of his biggest contradictions, Merson then replies ‘Yes but this is a big club. They will sell a gillion shirts. The money is there. the potential is there.’

Exactly!

Under new ambitious owners the potential will always be there and yes, we could sell a ‘gillion’ (whatever that means…) replica shirts, rather than the minute number sold now.

Paul Merson speaking to Sky Sports:

“At the end of the day they’ve got to draw the line the fans and go wait there a minute.

“This is a big city, it’s a big city, only one club.

“No one else has put their money into the club.

“Only Mike Ashley has put his money in.

“And he is not saying ‘I’m not selling, I’m going to ruin this club, I’m going to take it wherever you want.

“No one else has come forward with the money.

“So sooner or later they have to go you know what…

“Lucky it is for Mike Ashley, or else where would we be?”

Jeff Stelling:

“You have to say, if Mike Ashley wasn’t there, somebody else would be running that football club.”

Paul Merson:

“Why aint they?”

Jeff Stelling:

“Well because Mike Ashley won’t sell.”

Paul Merson:

“Yes but this is a big club.

“They will sell a gillion shirts.

“The money is there. the potential is there.

“Everybody in Newcastle supports Newcastle.

“At the end of the day, Newcastle haven’t won anything since the day I was born, know what I mean.

“We all have memories of that team Kevin Keegan had, they are not going to get there again, at the moment, that is a long way away.

“You know, them fans, all they ask for is they turn up week in week out…that’s a long journey to Norwich, all they ask is them players to work their socks off and if they get beat at Norwich, they get beat in the right way, not in the way that Steve Bruce said weren’t enough.”
