Norwich 3 Newcastle 1 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Saturday’s defeat

Norwich 3 Newcastle 1  – Saturday 17 August 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle going down to a second defeat of the season.

A poor first half saw Norwich dominate and go in 1-0 up, things only going further downhill from there.

Paul Patterson:

“The comparisons with the McClaren era are a bit shallow.

“This is shaping up to be far worse.

“Bruce can deliver his excuses and waffle about bad luck and hard work needed in future games but there is only one place this club is heading and that’s Championship football.”

Brian Standen:

“Yes we are in trouble, we had good chances as did they.

“But £40 million misses a nailed on sitter, their championship centre-forward scores three.

“Our consistent defence is cut to bits over and over!

“Yeah, we are in trouble.”

Ben Cooper:

“Well beaten by a better team over the 90 minutes.

“There were brief flashes of better things to come but overall Norwich were well worth the win.

“Ironic that Hayden said this week that he was enjoying the new freedom of an attacking manager…as he was our best attacker.

“Joelinton wasn’t.

“Can you go back to working on the defence now please because they were awful, keeper apart.”

David Punton:

“When Mr Ashley and Lee Charnley arrogantly paraded Steve Bruce, like they’d just landed Pep Guardiola, we all knew it was a worry.

“The footballing realities our owner and his poodle cannot control, came to bear at Carrow Road.

“Even two games in we look a mess.

“Bruce lacks the tactical acumen.

“Not good. Not good at all.”

Jamie Swan:

“What an utter pile of pony. That’s polite.

“It remains a mystery how Bruce is going to get any shape or organisation back (into one of the best organised teams in the league a few weeks ago).

“A bigger mystery how we are going to score enough goals with this line-up to win enough (any) games this term.

“Absolute shambles and what’s worse – is that I expected nothing less than this today.

“Tougher fixtures incoming, we are in big, big trouble. Understatement of the century.”

Nat Seaton:

“A really disappointing afternoon, at least we had some sun…

“My first thought leaving Carrow Road is that it is going to be an unbelievably hard season…to watch this home and away!”
