Newcastle 2 St Etienne 1 – St James Park first goals for Joelinton, Matty Longstaff…and Debuchy

Newcastle 2 St Etienne 1 – Saturday 3 August 3pm

A chaotic summer of pre-season ended with a relatively positive afternoon for Newcastle United.

Hopefully Allan Saint-Maximin limping off at the end after a bright half hour cameo won’t prove serious.

A goal in each half put the Magpies in charge in a match where they were on top for large spells.

Isaac Hayden almost gave NUFC the lead after rounding goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier midway through the first half. However, his shot was deflected wide of the post by Loic Perrin.

Six minutes before half-time though saw Joelinton score his first goal on home soil.

Fabian Schar played the striker through and the Brazilian did the rest.

Jonjo Shelvey struck the bar just before half-time and then Almiron should have scored his first goal for NUFC just after the break, only to see his effort saved just after the break when Shelvey set him up. The Paraguayan then sending another effort over the bar when well placed.

As the visitors tired, substitute Muto could have had a hat-trick. One effort ruled out for offside and then having a header saved, before he wasted a one on one with the visiting keeper when Allan Saint-Maximin provided the through ball.

Amongst all of that it was a special moment for another sub, Matty Longstaff.

Brother Sean has already shown his long range shooting prowess and 19 year old Matty unleashed a rocket from outside the box with 17 minutes to go.

Decent debuts as well for Willems and Saint-Maximin, although of course we only find out the reality once the proper stuff starts in eight days time,

In typical Newcastle style they gave the last word to Mathieu Debuchy, the former NUFC defender scoring a header with five minutes remaining, his first ever at St James Park, five years after leaving/deserting.

The crowd was a sparse 16,686, some five thousand down on the sole NUFC home friendly in August 2018 (Augsburg) and over 7,000 down on August 2017 (Hellas Verona), the summers when Rafa Benitez was preparing for a Premier League season with Newcastle United.
