Newcastle 1 Watford 1 – Instant United fan/writer reaction to Saturday’s draw

Newcastle 1  Watford 1 – Saturday 31 August 3pm

We asked a number of our regular writers to give us a brief instant reaction after the final whistle.

Newcastle climbing out of the relegation zone but only just, an unconvincing  draw against bottom club Watford.

The visitors taking the lead after only 70 seconds, Newcastle levelling through Schar just before half-time.

Jamie Swan:

“A game you would target to win in any season at home, but with Watford bottom of the stink pile, you would wager it was a diamond opportunity for 3 points.

“But we got off to the worst possible start practically from the whistle – and then you fear the worst as we don’t ever look like scoring bagfuls.

“By that I mean one or more!

“Sloppy all over, Miggy doing road runner demonstrations of how not to stay onside for the lino, make you fear further. If he could time it right, he’d be lethal. Maybe…

“Did better after the goal and second half. But a draw is probably fair. Opportunity missed.

“PS Stick Schar up front for a laugh.”

Jack Lacey-Hatton:

“Not a bad point really.

“If you had offered me 4 or 6 before Spurs I would have snapped your hand off.

“But we will need to get a decent home record going to get us through the dogfight.

“Hope to see Carroll on the pitch next time we are at SJP.”

Brian Standen:

“Two ways of looking at it, points lost or one gained!

“Either way, after being a goal down early doors a point is ok, just.

“Plenty promise with the likes of Willems and Joelinton, again the breaks went against us!

“Jury is out!”

David Punton:

“In this ‘new era’ I suppose we have to be happy with a point at home to Watford.

“Pains me to say that.

“Slipping behind after a minute made this a bigger ask and they are fighting to get their first points on the board.

“Rescued by Schar today, we have to be grateful we have a centre half who can finish like a centre forward.”

Jamie Smith:

“Solid performance but Watford’s benefiting from an early deflection saw them take a point that would never have happened without that early lapse.

“Worrying that there doesn’t seem to be enough goal threat against a struggling team but at least we’re a bit away from the bottom ahead of an easy trip to Anfield next time out.

“Still plenty stay aways without the organised boycott but apathy is setting in a bit.

“No idea what the rest of this season holds…”

Ben Cooper:

“An unlucky early goal down, United were completely outplayed until an equally fortunate goal got them back into the game.

“The last 55 minutes was much better and although Watford also had chances, NUFC had enough to win.

“Both of these teams will be in the relegation mix on this showing so Newcastle may rue those lost two points.

“A game lacking quality but reasonably entertaining.”

Nat Seaton:

“To go a goal down so early we did ok to come back and draw…

“I’m being kind mind you in saying that!

“We should be beating a poor team like the Watford team out there today.

“Not many (any?) positives to take forward other than their heads not going down after the early goal and the performance of Dubravka second half.”
