Newcastle 0 Arsenal 1 – Watch official match highlights here
It ended Newcastle 0 Arsenal 1 on Sunday afternoon.
Newcastle going down to an opening day defeat against a much weakened visiting side.
The game descended into chaos once Steve Bruce started making substitutions and tactical changes, half the team looking to have no idea as to what they were supposed to be doing in the final 35 minutes or so.
The first half saw Joelinton put a header just wide from a Matt Ritchie cross that was deflected, before creating a chance for himself that he hit straight at the keeper.
Whilst Shelvey hit a volley that was deflected just wide.
Nine minutes into the second period and Willems replaced Shelvey, the team never really recovering. Players appearing to not know where they were supposed to be playing.
Allan Saint-Maximin looked lively and showed great pace when he came on, producing Newcastle’s second and final shot on target with a low shot.
Almiron did ok as well but suffered from lack of movement around him, or any great plan from Steve Bruce as to how Newcastle were going to create and score.
If this trio (Almiron, Joelinton and ASM) can connect, there is hope that this season can be on the up in the near future.
